Welcome to Unit 3! There is a pet show at school. You will learn animal words, say where things are, and say what you like.

3.1Animals at the pet show

Say his for a boy's pet and her for a girl's pet: "Donnie and his duck", "Katie and her cat".

3.2In, on, under

Three desks with the sentences: The green frog is on the desk. The yellow frog is in the desk. The red frog is under the desk — The green frog is on the desk. The yellow frog is in the desk. The red frog is under the desk. (Stick the frogs in your book.)

Do not mix up in and on. A frog in a bag is inside it. A frog on a bag sits on the top.

The cat sits on the top of the book. Is the cat in, on or under the book?

3.3I like / I don't like

Two pictures: a girl says I like cats and a boy says I don't like cats; the girl says I don't like spiders and the boy says I like spiders — "I like cats." "I don't like cats."

3.4Story: The spider

Super Minds 1, p. 38.

Story: Whisper shows his friends a spider. Misty says "Oh no. I don't like spiders." The spider goes under the table. The friends look at it. "He's clever!" "He's amazing!" Now they like spiders. They say "They're great." The spider says "My brothers and sisters are in the tree!" There are lots of spiders, and the children shout "Aagh!"

3.5Pet show poster

3.6Phonics: the sound i

Two cartoon spiders: Tim waves a hat and his sister Kim hangs upside down — This is Tim and his silly sister Kim.

The i in these words says the same short sound: Tim, him, Kim, silly.

The word spider has a long i (like "eye"). It does not sound like Tim.

Which word has the same sound as Tim: him or spider?

3.7Science: Camouflage

Five animals with their names: snake, crocodile, butterfly, tiger, giraffe — Some animals look like the place where they live.

Four animals (tiger, lizard, bird, spider) and four places to hide: logs, trees, leaves, tall grass — Where do the animals hide?

Animals use camouflage: their colour looks like the place around them, so it is hard to see them. We say "What colour is the snake?" "The snake is green and black." Tigers hide in tall grass. The green crocodile hides in green water.

Why is it hard to see a green crocodile in green water?
