  • You can use today, tomorrow, yesterday, before and after to solve simple time problems (5.3.1)

5.1Time of the day

One day has different parts. Each part has its own name.

Part of the dayWhat we do
Morningwake up, brush teeth, eat breakfast
Afternooneat lunch, come home from school

A clock face has the numbers 1 to 12. It has two hands.

A clock with the short hour hand and the long minute hand labelled
The short hand is the hour hand. The long hand is the minute hand.
hour hand = short hand. minute hand = long hand.
Which hand is long?
Show answerHide answer

5.3Half, quarter and three quarters of an hour

The minute hand starts at 12. When it moves round the clock face, the part it covers is part of an hour.

Clock with a quarter of the face shaded
12 to 3
quarter of an hour
Clock with half of the face shaded
12 to 6
half of an hour
Clock with three quarters of the face shaded
12 to 9
three quarters of an hour

Figures drawn for this site; idea from Mathematics Year 1, Part 2, pp. 33-34.

Think of fractions: 1 over 4 is a quarter, 2 over 4 is a half, 3 over 4 is three quarters.
The minute hand moves from 12 to 6. How much of an hour is that?
Show answerHide answer
Half of an hour.

5.4Say and write the time

Look at the hour hand first. Then look at the minute hand.

Clock showing 3 o'clock
Minute hand on 12
Three o'clock (3:00)
Clock showing half past six
Minute hand on 6
Half past six (6:30)
Clock showing a quarter past nine
Minute hand on 3
Quarter past nine (9:15)
  • Minute hand on 12: o'clock.
  • Minute hand on 6: half past. The hour hand is between two numbers.
  • Minute hand on 3: quarter past.
Careful! At half past six the hour hand is between 6 and 7. It has not reached 7 yet.
The minute hand is on 12 and the hour hand is on 8. What is the time?
Show answerHide answer
Eight o'clock (8:00).
