FIRE SAFETY NOTICE
If the alarm rings, stop what you are doing and leave the room.
Walk. Do not run.
If there is smoke, keep your head low and cover your nose and mouth with your sleeve.
Wait on the field until your teacher calls your name.
The alarm rings and Zain sees smoke in the corridor. What should he do?
Show answerTunjuk jawapanHide answerSembunyi jawapan
C
The notice uses an if sentence: if there is smoke, keep your head low and cover your nose and mouth. This is an if sentence like the first conditional, with the if clause in the present simple and an instruction as the result (Academy Stars Year 6, Unit 8, p.99; the alarm and smoke words are from Unit 1, p.12).

What do we learn about Dina?

Have you ever ...? asks about an experience in your life up to now, and Dina answers Yes, I have. She then gives details in the past simple (Academy Stars Year 6, Unit 3, p.38).

QuestionSoalan 3
Dear Hana,
Thank you for the video of your school concert. You looked so confident on that big stage! When I was a girl, we didn't use to have a stage or a microphone. We used to stand on a wooden box under the coconut tree, and the whole village sat on mats to listen.
Love, Grandma
Where did Grandma probably sing when she was a girl?
Show answerTunjuk jawapanHide answerSembunyi jawapan
B
Grandma did not have a stage or microphone, and she stood on a box under the coconut tree while the village sat on mats. This tells us she sang outdoors in her village. The text does not say this directly, so you must infer it (Academy Stars Year 6, Unit 2, p.24; used to and didn't use to for the past, p.25).

Which sentence is correct?

A bus costs RM3 and a taxi costs RM18, so a bus is not as expensive as a taxi. The other sentences are false: a bicycle takes 35 minutes and a bus 20, a taxi costs six times a bus, and a taxi (10 minutes) is faster than a bus (Academy Stars Year 6, Unit 5, p.63: just as ... as and not as ... as).

Mr Aziz: Zain, you were in the library when the alarm rang, weren't you? Zain: Yes, sir. I was returning a book. Mr Aziz: And you left through the back door, didn't you? Zain: Yes, sir. I walked straight to the field.
Why does Mr Aziz end his sentences with weren't you? and didn't you?

D
A question tag is a short question added to a statement to check that something you believe is true, and it expects the answer yes (Academy Stars Year 6, Unit 10, p.125). Mr Aziz is checking where Zain was during the fire drill (Unit 1, p.12).

QuestionSoalan 10
Firefighters: Then and Now
A hundred years ago, a fire in a town was very frightening. Most homes had no telephone, so someone had to run to the fire station and ring a bell. The firefighters used to ride on a cart pulled by horses, and they carried water in leather buckets. Often the fire was too big for them to stop.
Today things are very different. People call 999 on a mobile phone, and a fire engine arrives in a few minutes. Modern firefighters wear special suits and helmets, and they use long hoses and tall ladders. Chief Karim of Station 4 has been a firefighter for twenty years. "Last Tuesday we were practising with the ladders when the alarm rang," he says. "We jumped on the engine and reached the shop in six minutes."
The chief also visits schools. "Children are learning fast," he told the Year 6 pupils. "If you know what to do, you will stay calm. Keep low if there is smoke, and never hide."
How did firefighters travel to a fire a hundred years ago?

QuestionSoalan 15
A: Pak Samad, blacksmith
B: Puan Rohani, teacher
C: Mr Leong, candle maker
I make horseshoes, gates and tools from iron. Years ago, nearly every village used to have a blacksmith, but now there are only a few of us. Last week I was heating a bar of iron when a visitor's little boy walked in. "Don't touch that!" I shouted.
I teach visitors how children studied in a village school long ago. In those days pupils didn't use to have pens, paper or electric lights, so every child used to bring a small oil lamp from home. Yesterday a girl was writing on her slate when it fell and broke. She was upset, but I told her not to worry.
Candles are made by hand in my workshop. The wax is melted, and then it is poured into a mould. I have made candles for twelve years. Before electric lights, families used to burn candles every evening. Nowadays most people buy them for decoration.
