CYCLE PATH

1. Cyclists must wear a helmet.
2. You mustn't ride faster than 15 km/h.
3. Walkers can use the left side of the path.
4. Skateboards are not allowed.

Four people use the path. Who is breaking a rule?
Show answerTunjuk jawapanHide answerSembunyi jawapan
C
Mustn't shows a rule: you must not ride faster than 15 km/h. Raj rides at 20 km/h, so he breaks rule 2. The others follow the rules (Academy Stars Year 6, Unit 10, p.126).

To: Aunty Rina

Hi Aunty! I'm sorry I'm late. I was waiting at the bus stop when it began to rain hard, so I ran across the road into a cafe. I'm going to wait here until the rain stops. I'll see you at 4 o'clock.

Zack

What was Zack doing when it began to rain?
Show answerTunjuk jawapanHide answerSembunyi jawapan
A
The past continuous was waiting shows the longer action. The rain began and interrupted it, and then he ran to the cafe (Academy Stars Year 6, Unit 1, p.11).

Sara: How are you going to get to the zoo on Saturday?
Jin: Cycling is too tiring for me, and the bus isn't fast enough. It stops at every corner. We're going to take the train.
Sara: Isn't that expensive?
Jin: Not really. A train ticket isn't as expensive as a taxi.

Why does Jin not want to go to the zoo by bus?
Show answerTunjuk jawapanHide answerSembunyi jawapan
C
Not fast enough means less fast than he needs, so the bus is too slow. Too tiring is the reason he does not cycle. The train is not as expensive as a taxi, which has nothing to do with the bus (Academy Stars Year 6, Unit 5, p.64; going to for plans, Unit 7, p.85).

QuestionSoalan 10

Crossing the River at Kampung Tanjung

Ten years ago, the people of Kampung Tanjung used to cross the river in small wooden boats. The boats were cheap, but they were too small for bicycles and not safe enough when the water was high. On rainy days the boatmen would not take anyone across, so many pupils were late for school. The bus went around the river and took forty minutes.

In 2019 the village built a new ferry. It is made of steel, and it is big enough for forty people and twenty bicycles. It is just as safe in the rain as on a sunny day. A single ticket costs RM1, but pupils with a school card pay only 50 sen. The crossing takes ten minutes.

Mr Kamal has driven the ferry for six years. "Our pupils are never late now," he says. Next year, the council is going to build a cycle path along the river bank.

Why were many pupils late for school ten years ago?
Show answerTunjuk jawapanHide answerSembunyi jawapan
B
The first paragraph says that on rainy days the boatmen would not take anyone across, so many pupils were late. The word so introduces the result (Unit 2 used to, p.25; Unit 5 reading, p.62).

The mother pays RM1.00 and the pupil with a school card pays 50 sen (RM0.50). RM1.00 + RM0.50 = RM1.50 (Academy Stars Year 6, Unit 5, p.67: find each price, then add).

QuestionSoalan 13

QuestionSoalan 14

A: The Bottle-Cap BenchB: The Denim ToteC: The Bamboo Bike
Pupils at SK Seri Indah collected about 3,000 plastic bottle caps. A factory melted them and pressed them into boards. The bench is used for reading and resting in the school garden, and it will not rot in the rain. Puan Rahmah's sewing group turns worn-out jeans into shopping bags. The jeans are washed, cut and sewn by hand. Every pair of jeans is different, so every bag looks different. A bag costs RM15. Mr Lee builds bikes with frames made of bamboo, which grows fast in Perak. His bikes are just as strong as steel ones, but not as heavy. One bike costs RM400, which is too expensive for many families, so Mr Lee is making a cheaper one.

A pencil holder is a useful thing, and it is made of an old tin can. It is used for keeping pens and pencils tidy. First, the can is washed and dried. Next, the coloured paper is cut and glued round the can. After that, patterns are drawn on the paper. Finally, the pens are put inside. In my opinion, this is a clever idea because it saves money and reduces rubbish.
