To: Wani Subject: My new hobby
Hi Wani,
Guess what? I'm going to learn the ukulele! Dad bought me one yesterday. My teacher, Mr Chong, says that if I practise for twenty minutes every day, I will play a whole song by December. My first lesson is on Tuesday at 4.30 p.m. I hope you will come to my first show!
Zack
Why did Zack write this email?

B
I'm going to learn the ukulele is a plan, and the whole email tells Wani about it (Unit 7, p. 85). He has already got a ukulele, he has not missed a lesson, and the invitation is to his first show, not to the lesson.

Dina,
I have gone to the market. I'll be back at about 11.00, but I may be late if the traffic is bad. The postman might bring a parcel for Grandpa. Please sign for it. Don't go out until I get home.
Mum
Which sentence about the parcel is correct?
Show answerTunjuk jawapanHide answerSembunyi jawapan

Might means 'perhaps': the postman may or may not come, so it is possible but not certain (Unit 8, p. 100). Mum is not sure, and the note gives no time for the parcel.

Which words describe the song that Ravi and Mei want?

QuestionSoalan 10
The Story Drum
Every Saturday morning, children gather under the big rain tree in Kampung Seri to hear Pak Hamdan, a retired teacher and storyteller. He brings an old drum, which is made of wood and goat skin. When he taps it softly, the children go quiet. When he beats it fast, they know that something exciting is going to happen in the story.
Pak Hamdan began telling stories forty years ago. In those days, there was no television in the village, so people used to sit outside and listen to the elders. "Stories are like songs," he says. "They need a good beginning, a clear rhythm and an ending that people remember." His favourite tales are folk stories from different parts of Malaysia, but he also invents new ones with the children.
Next month the village is going to hold its first Story Festival. Three storytellers will perform, and the festival starts at 10 a.m. on 14 November. Entry is free. Last year about 400 people came to the story evening. If it rains, the festival will move to the school hall, which has only 150 seats. Pak Hamdan therefore advises families to arrive early. He is a little nervous. "I might forget a line," he laughs, "but the drum will remind me!"

I am twelve and I play the violin. I have played it since I was seven, and I practise for an hour every day before school. On Saturday I am going to play in a concert at the town hall. I am nervous, but my teacher says, "If you breathe slowly, you will feel calmer." After the concert my family and I might have ice cream.
I am a librarian, and I have worked at the town library for ten years. Every Friday at 4 p.m. I read a story aloud to the children. Sometimes I use funny voices! Last month I wrote a story about a talking turtle. If a publisher likes it, it will become a book next year.
I lead the school band. We rehearse on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school. Next month we are going to a competition in Penang. The coach leaves school at 6 a.m. on Sunday, so the pupils must sleep early. If we win, we will play at the state festival in December.
