CLASS 6 TRIP TO THE SCIENCE CENTRE
• You don't have to bring money. Lunch is free.
• You mustn't run in the exhibition hall.
• You should bring water.

Which sentence is true?
Show answerTunjuk jawapanHide answerSembunyi jawapan
C
Don't have to means it is not necessary, so no money is needed (Unit 10, p.126). Mustn't is a rule that forbids running, and should is only advice to bring water.

Hafiz: Then someone must have taken it by mistake.

What does Hafiz think happened to the book?

Someone is a person we do not name, and by mistake means by accident (Unit 9, p.112). Hafiz says nothing about Dina losing it, about Mr Tan or about the canteen.

What does Grandpa say about the past?

Used to talks about a past habit that is not true now (Unit 2, p.25). The forty years (for + a period of time, Unit 4, p.51) are spent in the town, not the village.

QuestionSoalan 10

The Stone Spheres of Costa Rica

In the 1930s, workers were clearing a forest in Costa Rica for a banana farm when they made a strange discovery. In the ground lay hundreds of perfectly round stones. Some were as small as an orange, but others were about two metres wide.

Scientists learnt that people who lived there hundreds of years ago made the stones. They cut them from hard rock and rubbed them smooth with other stones. Sadly, farmers moved many of the spheres, so we cannot tell how they were first arranged.

Why did the people make them? Nobody knows. Some experts think the spheres showed how important a chief was. Others believe they marked the stars. They may even have been only for decoration. The people left no writing, so the mystery may never be solved.

Why were the workers in the forest in the 1930s?
Show answerTunjuk jawapanHide answerSembunyi jawapan
A
The first sentence says they were clearing a forest for a banana farm when they made a discovery. The past continuous (were clearing) is the longer action; the past simple (made) interrupted it (Unit 1, p.11).

Should pupils bring phones to school?

A: ZackB: MeiC: Ravi
I'm sorry, but I don't agree with the new rule. A phone can help if something goes wrong on the way home. My mother works late, so she sends me a message when she leaves the office. I never use my phone in class. I agree with the rule! Last term, a boy in my class kept playing a game during lessons and nobody could concentrate. In my opinion, phones should stay at home. If a pupil needs to speak to a parent, he can use the phone in the school office. I see what you mean, but I think both sides have a point. Pupils shouldn't use phones in lessons, but may need them later. My idea: pupils lock their phones in a box in the morning and take them back at 1.30 p.m.
