Question 10

Fit and Green

Last term, the Year 6 pupils at SK Bukit Permai spent a month on a project called Fit and Green. Mr Hamid, the PE teacher, began by asking everyone to keep a diary of what they ate and when they went to bed. Most pupils found that they slept after 11 p.m. and skipped breakfast. Many bought fried snacks and sweet drinks at the canteen because they were cheap and quick.

The class then made three changes. First, everyone went to bed by 9.30 p.m. so that they could wake up early. Second, they brought home-made food in reusable containers instead of buying packed snacks. This cut down on plastic waste as well as sugar. Third, they did twenty minutes of exercise on the field before the first lesson.

After a month, the pupils had more energy. Nobody fell asleep in class, and the school's rubbish bin was only half full on Fridays. Zarina, who used to feel tired all day, said, "I have so much energy now!" The class plans to share the project with other schools.

How did Mr Hamid begin the project?
Show answerHide answer
C
The first paragraph says he began by asking everyone to keep a diary of what they ate and when they went to bed.
For the teacher: Remembering, low difficulty, Unit 7, standard 3.2.1
Textbook p. 64
11

Question 11

Why did many pupils buy fried snacks and sweet drinks at the canteen?
Show answerHide answer
D
The first paragraph gives the reason with because: they were cheap and quick. For a 'why' question, find the reason word (p. 64).
For the teacher: Remembering, low difficulty, Unit 7, standard 3.2.2
Textbook p. 64
12

Question 12

Which change helped both the pupils' health and the environment?
Show answerHide answer
A
Home-made food has less sugar, and reusable containers mean less plastic waste (Unit 6, reduce and reuse). Sleep and exercise help health only; a diary only records habits.
For the teacher: Understanding, medium difficulty, Unit 6, standard 2.2.2
Textbook p. 54
13

Question 13

Mr Hamid found that most pupils skipped breakfast. What does skipped mean?
Show answerHide answer
B
To skip a meal is to miss it, so the pupils did not eat breakfast. Use the next sentence about snacks bought at the canteen to check the meaning (p. 65).
For the teacher: Understanding, medium difficulty, Unit 7, standard 3.2.4
Textbook p. 65
14

Question 14

Why was the school's rubbish bin only half full on Fridays?
Show answerHide answer
C
The article does not say this directly. The pupils brought home-made food in reusable containers instead of packed snacks, so less plastic went into the bin (Unit 6, reduce rubbish).
For the teacher: Analysing, high difficulty, Unit 6, standard 2.2.3
Textbook p. 53
