Question 8

Plastic-Free Fridays

Last year, the pupils of SK Taman Seri found something shocking. After one school week, the bins held more than 620 plastic bottles, cups and bags. Mr Chong, the Science teacher, asked the Green Club to do something about it.

Since January, every Friday has been "Plastic-Free Friday". Pupils bring water in reusable bottles and food in lunch boxes instead of plastic bags. The canteen no longer sells drinks in plastic cups. Instead, it fills the pupils' own bottles from a large water dispenser.

The club also made a "Reuse Corner" in the library. Pupils put clean plastic containers there, and other classes use them to keep crayons, seeds and paintbrushes.

The results are encouraging. By June, the bins held only about 150 plastic items each week.

"It is not difficult," says Nadia, the club president. "We only need to remember our bottles." She hopes other schools will join them next year.

[1 mark] (a)How often is Plastic-Free Friday held?
Show answerHide answer
every week
Every Friday is Plastic-Free Friday, so it happens every week (p. 54).
[1 mark] (b)Why did Mr Chong ask the Green Club to take action?

Question 10

A  Nurse Rosnah

I am a nurse at a clinic. On Saturdays, I visit Rumah Seri Kenanga, a home for old people. I take their blood pressure, read the newspaper aloud and sing old songs with them. Many of them have no family nearby, so they wait for me every week. I do not get extra pay, but their smiles are enough for me.

B  Mr Kumar

I retired from teaching two years ago, but I could not stop. Three evenings a week, I open the village hall and teach Mathematics and English to children whose parents cannot pay for tuition. I also collect used schoolbooks from neighbours and give them to pupils who need them. Last year, all twelve of my pupils scored an A in English.

C  Aisyah

I am in Year 6. When I saw a news report about the children's ward at our hospital, I wanted to help. My friends and I baked 200 cupcakes and sold them during recess for RM2 each. We raised RM400 and bought storybooks and a bright new rug for the ward. The children were very happy.
