QuestionSoalan 8

Safe Journey, Safe Home

Every year, many children are hurt on the road near their schools. This is why the Kampung Seri Road Safety Campaign was started. Volunteers stand at the school gates every morning to help children cross safely.

The campaign has three simple rules. First, always wear a seat belt in a car, even for a short trip. Second, cross only at a zebra crossing and look left and right before you step out. Third, if you walk or cycle in the evening, wear a bright jacket or a reflector so that drivers can see you.

Drivers also have a duty. Near schools the speed limit is only 40 kilometres per hour, and they must slow down when they see a crowd of children. Since the campaign began, the number of accidents near the school has fallen from twelve a year to only three.

"Road safety is everyone's job," says the campaign leader, Madam Rohani. "A few seconds of care can save a life."

Mei Ling, 12, makes peanut cookies at home and sells them at the Sunday market. Last month she earned RM60. "I put half of it in my bank account," she says, "and I use the rest to buy flour and sugar for the next batch." She hopes to open a small bakery when she grows up.

B

Teacher Karim runs the school savings club. His advice is simple. "Write down what you spend every week," he says. "Then you will know where your money goes. Before you buy something expensive, wait for a week. If you still want it, then buy it. Often you will find you do not need it."

C

Hassan grew up in a fishing village and his family could not always afford school things. At nine, he began to collect empty cans and bottles to sell. Today, at 30, he owns a small recycling company and gives work to twelve villagers. "I never gave up," he says. "Everyone who works with me has the same chance I had."
