QuestionSoalan 8

Songket: Cloth Woven with Gold

Songket is one of the most treasured cloths in Malaysia. The name comes from the Malay word sungkit, which means to hook, because the weaver hooks gold or silver thread between the silk threads. Songket is woven by hand on a wooden loom. A single piece of cloth can take several weeks, or even months, to finish.

In the past, only royalty were allowed to wear songket. Today, people from all walks of life put it on for weddings and on Hari Raya. Many patterns are named after flowers and plants, such as bunga tabur, which means scattered flowers. Each pattern tells us how closely the weavers looked at nature.

Because songket is slow to make, a good piece is not cheap. Even so, weavers in Terengganu and Kelantan still sit at their looms every day. If we wear songket and teach children to love it, this beautiful craft will not be forgotten.
