A TALK ABOUT OUR TRIP TO ROYAL BELUM
Good morning, everyone. My name is Encik Hafiz Kamal, and I am a park ranger at the Royal Belum State Park in Perak. Thank you, Cikgu Wong, for inviting me to your school. Today I want to tell you about your two-day trip to the park.
Royal Belum is one of the oldest rainforests in the world. It is about 130 million years old, which is older than the Amazon rainforest. All ten kinds of hornbills in Malaysia live here, so bring your eyes and your ears!
The trip was first planned for 11 July, but because of your school sports carnival, it is now on 18 July. Your bus will leave the school at 6.00 a.m. Many people think the boats go from Gerik town, but in fact you will get on a boat at the Pulau Banding jetty. The journey across the lake takes about forty-five minutes.
Last year's group slept in tents, but this year you will stay in wooden chalets near the lake. On the first afternoon, we will go on a jungle walk to look for the Rafflesia, the biggest flower in the world. If we are lucky, we may see one that is about to bloom.
What should you bring? You must bring insect repellent and a raincoat, because it rains almost every afternoon here. Please do not bring plastic bags or food in plastic boxes. Finally, remember our park rule: take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints. Thank you.

20 marksQuestion 41
My family is going to Pulau Pangkor for three days during the school holidays, and we have one more seat in the car! Would you like to come with us? Which activity would you like to do there: snorkelling, cycling around the island or something else? And what should we bring?
Write soon!
Hana
From: ______________ To: hana@email.com
Show answerHide answer
Hi Hana,
Thank you for inviting me to Pulau Pangkor. Yes, I would love to come! My parents have already said yes because I have no tuition during the holidays.
I would really like to go snorkelling. I have never done it before, and I want to see the colourful fish and coral.
I think we should bring sunscreen, hats and a big bag for our rubbish. Let's keep the beach clean!
Thanks again. I can't wait!
See you soon,
Aina
Plan before you write: Hana asks three things, so answer all three: (1) can you come, (2) which activity, (3) what to bring. Give a reason or a detail for each. Start by thanking her for the invitation and end with a friendly closing.
Official rating scale (Paper 2 Parts 1 and 2), 0 to 5 marks for each of the four areas:
| Scale | Content | Communicative achievement | Organisation | Language |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | All content is relevant to the task. Target reader is fully informed. | Produces a text that communicates straightforward ideas using the conventions of the communicative task reasonably well. | Uses simple connectors and a limited number of cohesive devices appropriately. | Uses basic vocabulary appropriately. Uses simple grammatical forms with a good degree of control. While errors are noticeable, meaning can still be determined. |
| 4 | Performance shares features of scores 3 and 5. | |||
| 3 | Minor irrelevances and/or omissions may be present. Target reader is on the whole informed. | Produces a text that communicates simple ideas in simple ways. | Text is connected using basic, high-frequency connectors. | Uses basic vocabulary reasonably. Uses simple grammatical forms with some degree of control. Errors may impede meaning at times. |
| 2 | Performance shares features of scores 1 and 3. | |||
| 1 | Irrelevances and/or misinterpretation of task may be present. Target reader is minimally informed. | Produces isolated short units about simple and concrete matters, not always communicating successfully. | Production unlikely to be connected, though punctuation and simple connectors (i.e. and) may on occasion be used. | Produces basic vocabulary of isolated words and phrases. Produces few simple grammatical forms with only limited control. |
| 0 | Content is totally irrelevant. Target reader is not informed. | Performance below band 1. | ||
The tick points above give the same 20 marks: five for each area. Tick honestly, then check that your total matches the band you would give each area.
Paper 2 Part 2
20 marksQuestion 42
In about 90 words, write an essay about how students can keep the school clean.
You must use the notes below to help you.
Show answerHide answer
A clean school is important. When there is no rubbish, mosquitoes cannot breed, so we stay healthy. A clean school is also a nice place to study.
In the classroom, we should follow the cleaning duty roster. Every day, a group of students can sweep the floor and empty the bin.
Around the school, we must not litter. We should use the bins and recycle paper, cans and bottles.
Besides that, our school can hold a "Cleanest Class" competition every month, so everyone will try harder.
If we all do our part, our school will stay clean!
Turn each box into one paragraph. Write each note as a full sentence, then add one more sentence with a detail, an example or a reason. Do not just copy the notes as a list. Your own idea counts as content too, so give it its own short paragraph. Keep to about 90 words: one or two sentences for each note is enough.
This part is marked with the same official rating scale as Part 1: Content, Communicative achievement, Organisation and Language, 0 to 5 marks each (see the table under Paper 2 Part 1). Band 5 for Content means every note is covered and relevant, so the reader is fully informed; a missing note or no own idea drops Content to about 3.
