Thank you for your last letter. I (0) is very happy to have a pen pal from Australia. My name is Julia, and I am thirteen years old. I live (9) at Kota Bharu, a city in the east of Malaysia.
I have two best friends, Nisha and Hui Min. (10) Them are in my class, and we all love shopping at weekends. Last Sunday, we (11) go to the new shopping mall in town. Hui Min bought (12) a orange T-shirt because it was on sale. The shoes there are (13) cheap than at the shop near my house, so I bought a pair for school.
My mother always drives (14) careful when the roads are busy on weekends. She also says we (15) must to keep our bags close to us in crowded places. My little brother (16) don't like shopping, so he usually stays at home with my father.
Please write soon and tell me about the places you like to visit in Perth.
Your friend,
Julia

STUDENTS LEARN HOW TO STAY SAFE ON THE ROAD
Klang, Monday. More than 300 Form 1 students of SMK Bukit Melawati learned how to stay safe on the road at the school's first Road Safety Day last Friday. The event was organised by the school's Road Safety Club, with help from the Klang police.
The programme began at 8.00 a.m. with a talk by Sergeant Hasnah Ibrahim. The talk was first planned for the school hall, but because the air-conditioning was broken, it was moved to the library. The sergeant told the students that many accidents happen near schools because drivers go too fast and walkers do not use the crossing. She also showed a short video of a boy who ran across a busy road without looking.
After the talk, club members led the students to the school field, where they had built a zebra crossing with paint and traffic cones. The students took turns to practise crossing the road safely. The police also gave 50 free helmets to students who cycle to school.
At the end of the day, there was a quiz. The winner, Hakim Zulkifli from 1 Dedikasi, won a bicycle light. “I will always look left and right before I cross the road,” he said. The principal, Puan Zainab Mokhtar, said that the school will hold Road Safety Day every year.

Hi Danish,
I hope you are feeling better now!
Cikgu Wong gave us Mathematics homework, page 45, questions 1 to 10. We must hand it in on Thursday.
Something special happened too. We had a fire drill, and everyone gathered on the field. It was exciting.
The Science project is due next Monday. We have to work in pairs, so let's do it together in the library on Wednesday.
Take care, and see you soon!
Alya
Plan before you write: Danish asks three things, so answer all three in his order: (1) the homework, (2) what happened, (3) when the Science project is due. Give a detail for each (subject, page, day). Wish him well at the start and end with a friendly closing.
Official rating scale (Paper 2 Parts 1 and 2), 0 to 5 marks for each of the four areas:
| Scale | Content | Communicative achievement | Organisation | Language |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | All content is relevant to the task. Target reader is fully informed. | Produces a text that communicates straightforward ideas using the conventions of the communicative task reasonably well. | Uses simple connectors and a limited number of cohesive devices appropriately. | Uses basic vocabulary appropriately. Uses simple grammatical forms with a good degree of control. While errors are noticeable, meaning can still be determined. |
| 4 | Performance shares features of scores 3 and 5. | |||
| 3 | Minor irrelevances and/or omissions may be present. Target reader is on the whole informed. | Produces a text that communicates simple ideas in simple ways. | Text is connected using basic, high-frequency connectors. | Uses basic vocabulary reasonably. Uses simple grammatical forms with some degree of control. Errors may impede meaning at times. |
| 2 | Performance shares features of scores 1 and 3. | |||
| 1 | Irrelevances and/or misinterpretation of task may be present. Target reader is minimally informed. | Produces isolated short units about simple and concrete matters, not always communicating successfully. | Production unlikely to be connected, though punctuation and simple connectors (i.e. and) may on occasion be used. | Produces basic vocabulary of isolated words and phrases. Produces few simple grammatical forms with only limited control. |
| 0 | Content is totally irrelevant. Target reader is not informed. | Performance below band 1. | ||
The tick points above give the same 20 marks: five for each area. Tick honestly, then check that your total matches the band you would give each area.
Paper 2 Part 2
20 marksQuestion 42
In about 90 words, write an essay about a place you like to visit.
You must use the notes below to help you.
Show answerHide answer
My favourite place to visit is my grandparents' village in Kedah. It is about three hours from my house, so we usually go there by car during the school holidays.
In the village, my cousins and I catch fish in the river, ride bicycles along the paddy fields and help my grandmother cook.
I like this place because the air is fresh and quiet, and I feel very happy there. It is also special because my grandparents always welcome us with delicious food.
One day, I would like to bring my friends there too.
Choose a real place you know well. Turn each box into one paragraph: where it is and how you get there, what you do there, and why you like it. Write each note as a full sentence, then add one more sentence with a detail, an example or a reason. Your own idea counts as content too, so give it its own short sentence. Keep to about 90 words: one or two sentences for each note is enough.
This part is marked with the same official rating scale as Part 1: Content, Communicative achievement, Organisation and Language, 0 to 5 marks each (see the table under Paper 2 Part 1). Band 5 for Content means every note is covered and relevant, so the reader is fully informed; a missing note or no own idea drops Content to about 3.
