Question 17

RADIO SUARA PANTAI: HEALTHY TEENS

Hadi: Good afternoon, listeners, and welcome to Healthy Teens. My guest today is Dr Sarah Tan, a dietitian at Kota Bharu Hospital. Welcome, Dr Sarah.

Dr Sarah: Thank you, Hadi. It is lovely to be here.

Hadi: Let us start with breakfast. Do many teenagers skip it?

Dr Sarah: Sadly, yes. In a recent survey, four in every ten students said they do not eat breakfast. Some think it helps them stay slim, but they feel tired and hungry by ten o'clock and then buy sweet snacks. A good breakfast can be very simple, such as wholemeal bread and an egg.

Hadi: And what should teenagers drink?

Dr Sarah: Plain water is best. Many students think fizzy drinks are fine, but one can has about nine teaspoons of sugar. A teenager should have no more than six teaspoons in a whole day.

Hadi: What about exercise?

Dr Sarah: A few years ago, doctors said thirty minutes was enough. Now the advice is at least sixty minutes every day. It does not have to be at a gym: cycling to school or playing badminton with friends all count.

Hadi: And sleep?

Dr Sarah: Teenagers need eight to ten hours a night, but many sleep for only about six hours because they use their phones in bed. My advice is to switch off your phone one hour before bedtime.

Hadi: Where can our listeners learn more?

Dr Sarah: I will give a free talk on Saturday 23 November. Last month's talk was at the hospital, but this time it is at the Tumpat Community Hall. Everyone is welcome.

Hadi: Thank you very much, Dr Sarah.

Dear Cikgu Rajan,
Thank you for your email. A Healthy Lunch Day is a great idea. I will bring a big bowl of fruit salad, because my mother makes it very well.
I can come at 7.00 a.m. to help you set the tables. My father will drive me to school, so I will not be late.
After lunch, we can play a quiz about healthy food. The winning team can get a small prize.
See you on Friday.
Yours sincerely,
Sofea

Plan before you write: the teacher asks three questions, so answer all three: (1) what you will bring, (2) can you come at 7.00 a.m., (3) a game or activity after lunch. Give a reason or a detail for each. You are writing to a teacher, so keep the tone polite (Dear Cikgu Rajan, ... Yours sincerely) but friendly.

Question 42

In your English class, you have been talking about special days in your life.
In about 90 words, write an essay about a day you will never forget.
You must use the notes below to help you.
Notes: A day I will never forget. 1 Where and when: where were you, who was with you. 2 What happened: the first thing that happened, the most exciting part. 3 How you felt: at the beginning, at the end. 4 Why you will never forget it: what did you learn.
[20 marks] Write your essay.
Show answerHide answer
Model answer (97 words)
The day I will never forget is the day I won my first swimming race. It was a sunny Saturday last June, and my whole family came to the school pool.
At the beginning, I was very nervous because the other girls were taller than me. When the whistle blew, I swam as fast as I could. The most exciting part came at the end, when I touched the wall first and everybody cheered!
I felt proud and happy. I will never forget that day because I learned that hard work and courage can take us far.

This is a story about the past, so use the past simple all the way through and keep the same tense. Turn each numbered box into one short paragraph, or put two boxes together. Write each prompt as a full sentence, then add one detail, a reason or a feeling. Do not copy the notes as a list. Keep to about 90 words: one or two sentences for each box is enough.

This part is marked with the same official rating scale as Part 1: Content, Communicative achievement, Organisation and Language, 0 to 5 marks each (see the table under Paper 2 Part 1). Band 5 for Content means every note is covered and relevant, so the reader is fully informed; a missing note drops Content to about 3.
