A NEW BUS FOR STUDENTS IN KOTA SETIA
Students in Kota Setia now have a safer and cheaper way to get to school. On Monday, 6 January, the town council launched a service called Bas Pelajar. It was supposed to start in December, but the new buses arrived late.
Six buses run between the Kota Setia bus terminal and four secondary schools. The first bus leaves the terminal at 6.15 a.m. and the last one at 7.15 a.m. In the afternoon, buses leave the schools at 1.30 p.m. and 2.30 p.m. Buses do not run on Saturdays, Sundays or public holidays.
A one-way ticket costs RM1.00, but students who show their school identity card pay only 50 sen. Students who do not carry cash can use a Touch 'n Go card, and the driver will not accept bank notes bigger than RM10.
"Many parents spend a lot of time and money taking their children to school by car," said Puan Rohani, the head of the town council transport unit. "We hope Bas Pelajar will reduce the traffic in front of the schools." Parents who have a complaint or a question can call the hotline at 06-762 5511 during office hours.

RINA'S WEEKEND BUSINESS
Rina is fourteen years old, and she loves baking. Last year she wanted a tablet for her studies, but it cost RM850, and her monthly allowance was only RM50. Her father said, "If you want it, you must earn the money yourself. When you have saved half of the price, I will pay the rest."
So Rina decided to sell cupcakes. Before she started, she made a budget. One batch of twenty cupcakes needed flour, eggs and sugar that cost RM18. She sold each cupcake for RM1.50, so one batch brought in RM30. After she paid for the ingredients, she had RM12 left. "That is my profit," she told her mother proudly.
Rina sold her cupcakes at the Sunday market near her house, and she also took orders from her neighbours through a chat group. Soon she had so many customers that she baked three batches every weekend.
Things did not always go well. One Sunday, a customer complained that a cupcake was not fresh. Rina gave her a refund of RM1.50 and promised to bake early in the morning from then on. Another customer, Mr Tan, asked for a discount. Rina agreed to take 10% off, because he was buying ten cupcakes. He was happy that he got a good bargain, and he told his friends about her.
After twelve weeks of hard work, Rina had saved RM425. It was a little less than she expected, because some money went on refunds and discounts. Her father kept his promise and paid the rest. Rina bought the tablet, but she did not stop baking. "I enjoy earning my own money," she says.

Jack

Hi Jack,
Thanks for your email. A school trip sounds exciting!
Last month, my family went to Melaka for the weekend. We travelled by train from Kuala Lumpur to Tampin and then took a bus to the town. The journey took about three hours.
I enjoyed the river cruise most because we saw old buildings and colourful murals from the boat. The food was delicious too.
I hope you will have a wonderful trip!
Best wishes,
Aina
Plan before you write: Jack asks three questions, so answer all three: (1) where you went, (2) how you travelled, (3) what you enjoyed most. Use the past simple because the trip is finished. Start by thanking him and end with a friendly closing.
Official rating scale (Paper 2 Parts 1 and 2), 0 to 5 marks for each of the four areas:
| Scale | Content | Communicative achievement | Organisation | Language |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | All content is relevant to the task. Target reader is fully informed. | Produces a text that communicates straightforward ideas using the conventions of the communicative task reasonably well. | Uses simple connectors and a limited number of cohesive devices appropriately. | Uses basic vocabulary appropriately. Uses simple grammatical forms with a good degree of control. While errors are noticeable, meaning can still be determined. |
| 4 | Performance shares features of scores 3 and 5. | |||
| 3 | Minor irrelevances and/or omissions may be present. Target reader is on the whole informed. | Produces a text that communicates simple ideas in simple ways. | Text is connected using basic, high-frequency connectors. | Uses basic vocabulary reasonably. Uses simple grammatical forms with some degree of control. Errors may impede meaning at times. |
| 2 | Performance shares features of scores 1 and 3. | |||
| 1 | Irrelevances and/or misinterpretation of task may be present. Target reader is minimally informed. | Produces isolated short units about simple and concrete matters, not always communicating successfully. | Production unlikely to be connected, though punctuation and simple connectors (i.e. and) may on occasion be used. | Produces basic vocabulary of isolated words and phrases. Produces few simple grammatical forms with only limited control. |
| 0 | Content is totally irrelevant. Target reader is not informed. | Performance below band 1. | ||
The tick points above give the same 20 marks: five for each area. Tick honestly, then check that your total matches the band you would give each area.
Paper 2 Part 2
20 marksQuestion 42
In about 100 words, write an essay about how you save your pocket money.
You must use the notes below to help you.
| How I save my pocket money | |
|---|---|
| Why I save | buy something I really want; emergencies; school trip |
| How I save | bring lunch from home; use a piggy bank or a bank account; write down what I spend |
| What I should not do | spend on things I do not need; borrow money from friends |
| Your own idea | ... |
Show answerHide answer
I think saving money is a good habit. I save because I want to buy a new bicycle, and I may need money in an emergency.
I bring lunch from home instead of buying food at the canteen. I put the money into a bank account, and I write down everything I spend.
I do not buy things I do not need, and I never borrow money from friends because it is hard to pay back.
Besides that, I sometimes sell my old books online to earn extra money.
If everyone saves a little each week, we will have enough for the things that matter.
Turn each row of the notes into one paragraph. Write each note as a full sentence, then add one more sentence with a detail, an example or a reason. Do not just copy the notes as a list. Your own idea counts as content too, so give it its own short paragraph. Keep to about 100 words: one or two sentences for each note is enough.
This part is marked with the same official rating scale as Part 1: Content, Communicative achievement, Organisation and Language, 0 to 5 marks each (see the table under Paper 2 Part 1). Band 5 for Content means every note is covered and relevant, so the reader is fully informed; a missing note or no own idea drops Content to about 3.
