Report: Kaamatan Open House at SMK Tanjung Aru
by Jessica Jimmy, 2 Dahlia
Kaamatan is the harvest festival of the Kadazandusun people of Sabah, and it is celebrated every May. This year our school held its own Kaamatan open house on Friday, 30 May, in the school hall, and I was a member of the committee.
The programme was planned for 9.00 a.m., but the guest of honour, Puan Julia Matius, was stuck in traffic, so it began at 9.45 a.m. First, twenty students performed the Sumazau, a traditional dance. About 400 visitors were expected, but only 350 came because of the heavy rain.
The most popular part was the food. Visitors queued for hinava, a fish salad, and for tapai, a sweet rice drink. Our teachers also helped us to wear traditional costumes, and the Unduk Ngadau beauty contest was won by Natalia from Form 4.
Each visitor paid RM5 for a ticket. All the money, RM1,750, will be given to a children's home near our school. Our advisor, Cikgu Darius, says that next year we will add a corner for traditional games.

A Lucky Escape on Bukit Mawar
Three friends, Hadi, Wei Jie and Rajan, are lucky to be alive after a hiking trip went wrong last Sunday. The boys, who are all fifteen, are keen hikers and have been members of their school's adventure club for two years. They set off at 7.30 a.m. and planned to be home by 1.00 p.m. Sadly, they did not check the weather forecast, so they did not know that a thunderstorm was coming.
At 11.00 a.m., heavy rain began. The path became slippery and Hadi fell and twisted his ankle. His friends could not carry him, and there was no signal on their phones. Fortunately, Rajan had a whistle in his bag, an idea from his father, who always tells him to carry one. He blew it again and again.
Luckily, a forest ranger, Encik Zul, heard the whistle while he was checking the trail. He called the rescue team, and two hours later Hadi was carried down the hill on a stretcher. At the hospital, the doctor said that the ankle was not broken, and that Hadi would be back on the football field in three weeks.
"We were lucky," says Rajan. "Next time we will tell our parents which path we are taking." The adventure club has now made a new rule: every hiking group must carry a first aid kit and a whistle.

My brother's basketball team is in the school final next Saturday afternoon, and we have one spare ticket! Would you like to come with us? Do you want to stay for dinner at our house afterwards? And what snacks should we bring to the match?
Write back soon!
Zack
From: ______________ To: zack@email.com
Show answerHide answer
Hi Zack,
Thanks for inviting me to the basketball final. Yes, I would love to come! My parents have agreed because I have finished all my homework.
I would also like to stay for dinner at your house. I will tell my mother, and she can pick me up at nine o'clock.
I think we should bring some water, sandwiches and a bag of oranges. We can share them with your brother's team at half-time.
I can't wait to cheer for them!
See you on Saturday,
Nadia
Plan before you write: Zack asks three things, so answer all three: (1) can you come, (2) can you stay for dinner, (3) what snacks to bring. Give a reason or a detail for each. Start by thanking him for the invitation and end with a friendly closing.
Official rating scale (Paper 2 Parts 1 and 2), 0 to 5 marks for each of the four areas:
| Scale | Content | Communicative achievement | Organisation | Language |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | All content is relevant to the task. Target reader is fully informed. | Produces a text that communicates straightforward ideas using the conventions of the communicative task reasonably well. | Uses simple connectors and a limited number of cohesive devices appropriately. | Uses basic vocabulary appropriately. Uses simple grammatical forms with a good degree of control. While errors are noticeable, meaning can still be determined. |
| 4 | Performance shares features of scores 3 and 5. | |||
| 3 | Minor irrelevances and/or omissions may be present. Target reader is on the whole informed. | Produces a text that communicates simple ideas in simple ways. | Text is connected using basic, high-frequency connectors. | Uses basic vocabulary reasonably. Uses simple grammatical forms with some degree of control. Errors may impede meaning at times. |
| 2 | Performance shares features of scores 1 and 3. | |||
| 1 | Irrelevances and/or misinterpretation of task may be present. Target reader is minimally informed. | Produces isolated short units about simple and concrete matters, not always communicating successfully. | Production unlikely to be connected, though punctuation and simple connectors (i.e. and) may on occasion be used. | Produces basic vocabulary of isolated words and phrases. Produces few simple grammatical forms with only limited control. |
| 0 | Content is totally irrelevant. Target reader is not informed. | Performance below band 1. | ||
The tick points above give the same 20 marks: five for each area. Tick honestly, then check that your total matches the band you would give each area.
Paper 2 Part 2
20 marksQuestion 42
In about 100 words, write an essay about a festival or tradition in your family.
You must use the notes below to help you.
A festival or tradition in my family
- What it is: the name of the festival or tradition, and when it happens
- What we do: food, clothes, activities
- Who takes part: which family members, and what each person does
- Why it is special: what it means to your family
- Your own idea
Show answerHide answer
Every year, my family celebrates Hari Raya Aidilfitri, and it is my favourite time of the year. We always spend the day at my grandparents' house in Kuala Kangsar.
On the morning of Raya, we wear our new baju Melayu and baju kurung, and then we pray together at the mosque. After that, we eat ketupat and rendang, which my grandmother has cooked since the night before.
The oldest members of the family give money to the children, and everyone asks for forgiveness. This tradition is special because it brings the whole family together.
We also take a family photo every year to see how we have grown.
Turn each box into a paragraph. Write each note as a full sentence, then add one more sentence with a detail, an example or a reason. Do not just copy the notes as a list. Your own idea counts as content too, so give it its own short paragraph. Keep to about 100 words: two sentences for each note is enough. You may write about any festival or tradition: a religious festival, a birthday custom, a family gathering, a weekend routine.
This part is marked with the same official rating scale as Part 1: Content, Communicative achievement, Organisation and Language, 0 to 5 marks each (see the table under Paper 2 Part 1). Band 5 for Content means every note is covered and relevant; a missing note or no own idea drops Content to about 3.
