Question 17

STUDENTS BUILD A SOLAR BOAT TO CLEAN THE RIVER

KUCHING, Saturday - A team of five Form 3 students from SMK Seri Perdana has built a solar-powered boat that collects floating rubbish from rivers. The boat, called Sungai Bot, won first prize at the National Young Inventors Contest, which was held in Putrajaya last week.

The idea began when the team leader, Adam Hakim, 15, saw plastic bags and bottles floating in the Sarawak River near his house. "Every weekend, the river looked dirtier," he said. With the help of their Science teacher, Puan Grace Anak Jimmy, the team spent four months and RM800 on the project. They made the body from an old plastic water tank and used four solar panels borrowed from the school workshop.

The boat is controlled by a remote and has a net at the front. In a test on a 200-metre part of the river, it collected 38 kilogrammes of rubbish in one hour, mostly plastic bottles. The team says the boat can work for six hours on a sunny day, but only for two hours when the sky is cloudy.

The students now want to improve their design so that it can carry heavier loads. They have also been invited to show the boat to the Kuching City Council in January, and they hope that the council will buy ten boats. "We want to see clean rivers across Sarawak," said Adam.

Irfan
In about 90 words, write a message to Irfan. Apologise, explain what happened and reply to his questions.

Show answerHide answer
Model answer (98 words)
Hi Irfan,
I am really sorry about Saturday. I should have told you earlier that I could not come.
My grandmother was taken to hospital in the morning, so my family went to see her. We came home very late, and I left my phone in the car, so I could not message you.
Monday is fine. I will meet you at the library at 2.30 p.m. I will bring the tablet with the pictures, and I will also bring a charger, just in case.
Once again, sorry for the trouble. See you on Monday!
Best wishes,
Aiman

Plan before you write: Irfan asks one question (Why did you not come?), makes one request (meet me on Monday) and adds one instruction (bring the tablet). Your message must also apologise. That makes four content points. Start with the apology, give the reason, then answer the rest in Irfan's order.

Question 42

Your school magazine is printing reviews of gadgets that students use every day.
In about 120 words, write a review of a gadget that you use (a phone, a tablet, a smart watch or any other).
You must use the notes below to help you.
Notes: A gadget I use every day. What it is: name of the gadget, what it does. Good points: useful, easy to use, one more good point. Not so good: one problem, e.g. battery, price. Your opinion: would you recommend it, to whom and why.
[20 marks] Write your review.
Show answerHide answer
Model answer (127 words)
My tablet: a small tool with a big job
I use my tablet every day. It is a lightweight tablet with a ten-inch screen, and I use it to read, do homework and watch educational videos.
There are several good points. First, it is very easy to use, so even my little brother can open the apps by himself. Also, it is thinner and lighter than a laptop, so I can carry it to school.
However, it is not perfect. The battery runs out after about six hours, which is a problem when I forget to charge it. It was also quite expensive.
All in all, I would recommend it to students who like reading and studying online. It is useful, and it is worth the price.

Turn each box into one paragraph. Write each note as a full sentence, then add one more sentence with a detail, an example or a reason. Do not copy the notes as a list. A review needs your own opinion: finish with a clear recommendation and say who it is for. Keep to about 120 words: two sentences for each box is enough.

This part is marked with the same official rating scale as Part 1: Content, Communicative achievement, Organisation and Language, 0 to 5 marks each (see the table under Paper 2 Part 1). Band 5 for Content means every note is covered and relevant, so the reader is fully informed; a missing note or no opinion drops Content to about 3.
