Question 17
A SPEECH ABOUT SAFETY WEEK
Good morning, teachers and friends. My name is Nadia Hamid, and I am the chairperson of the Safety Club. Thank you, Cikgu Hamdan, for letting me speak at today's assembly. I would like to tell you about our Safety Week.
We first planned the week for 1 September, but because of the Form 5 trial exams, it will now begin on Monday, 8 September. On the first morning, a fire officer will show you how to use a fire extinguisher. Many of you think this will be on the school field, as it was last year. In fact, the grass is being replanted, so the demonstration will be held in the car park behind the canteen.
Please remember the number for all emergencies in Malaysia, because it can save a life. It is 999, not 911 like in the films you watch. That number brings the police, an ambulance or the fire brigade.
The first aid workshop is for Form 4 on Tuesday, for Form 3 on Wednesday and for Form 2 on Thursday. On Friday, we will have a poster competition with the theme "Safe at Home". This year the winning class will not receive cash. Instead, they will win book vouchers worth RM150.
If you want to help the Safety Club, please sign up before Friday. The forms are with the prefects. Thank you, and stay safe.

Model answer (95 words)
Dear Encik Rizal,
I am writing to apply to be a Junior Safety Ambassador. I would like to join because I often see small children crossing the road carelessly outside the school, and I want to help keep them safe.
I have been a prefect for two years, so I know how to give clear instructions politely. I am free every Tuesday and Thursday after school, and I can attend the training on Saturday, 15 November.
Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely, Aina Sofea, 3 Cekal
Plan before you write: the notice asks for three things (why you want to join, your experience or skills, and when you are free), and it also gives a training date, so mention it. This is a formal email to a teacher: start with Dear Encik Rizal, say why you are writing in the first sentence, avoid short forms such as I'm and end with Yours sincerely.

[20 marks]Write your report.
Show answerHide answer
Model answer (109 words) Report on the Taman Murni Fun Run
Introduction
The Taman Murni Fun Run was held last Sunday at 7.00 a.m. About 150 residents and students took part in the 3 km run, which the residents' association organised to promote a healthy lifestyle.
What happened
Before the run, we did a warm-up exercise and listened to a safety briefing from a police officer. Halfway through the race, it suddenly rained heavily. One runner slipped and fell, but the first aid team helped him quickly and he was able to walk home.
Conclusion
The event was a great success because everyone cooperated. Next year, the organisers should provide umbrellas and a covered rest area, so that runners will stay dry and safe.
Turn each box into one paragraph under a short heading (Introduction, What happened, Conclusion). Write each note as a full sentence in the past tense, add one detail, and use your own idea as the recommendation in the conclusion. A report is formal, so avoid short forms and stories about your own feelings. Keep to about 110 words.
This part is marked with the same official rating scale as Part 1: Content, Communicative achievement, Organisation and Language, 0 to 5 marks each (see the table under Paper 2 Part 1). Band 5 for Content means every note is covered and relevant, so the reader is fully informed; a missing note or no own idea drops Content to about 3.
