REPORT: THE BOOKS FOR ALL PROJECT by Priya Nair, secretary of the Interact Club
The Interact Club of SMK Seri Pantai started the Books for All project to help the library of a rural school in Sabah. The idea came from our club advisor, Puan Rohana, who read about the school in a newspaper in February.
Planning began on 3 March, when twelve members met to set a target of 1,500 books. At first, we wanted to finish in two weeks, but we agreed to take three weeks because the school holidays were near. Collection started on 24 March. Boxes were placed in every classroom, and the students of Form 1 brought the most books, 420 in all. By 14 April, we had collected 1,640 books, which was more than our target.
On Saturday, 19 April, thirty volunteers sorted the books by subject. About 100 books were too old to read, so we gave them to a recycling centre. The other books were packed into 40 boxes. A transport company agreed to carry the boxes for free. They left on 26 April and, to our delight, arrived at the school on 29 April.
The pupils sent us a thank-you video last week. Next year, we plan to collect storybooks in Iban and Kadazandusun.

A YOUNG LIFESAVER Kavita Raj, 17
Paragraph 1. Kavita Raj is a Form 5 student in Ipoh during the week. At weekends, she is a volunteer with the Ipoh Youth First Aid Team. She joined at the age of 13, after her grandfather collapsed at home and nobody in the family knew what to do.
Paragraph 2. At first, Kavita was afraid of the sight of blood. However, her trainer, Encik Ramesh, taught her to stay calm by practising on dummies every Sunday. The team leader, Puan Zaleha, was strict about the rules. Kavita failed her first test, but she passed it on the second attempt.
Paragraph 3. Now Kavita and five other volunteers work at community events such as fun runs. At last year's marathon, a runner fainted near the finishing line. Kavita gave him water, kept him in the shade and called an ambulance. He recovered in an hour. "One person alone cannot lift a stretcher," she says. "Teamwork matters more than skill."
Paragraph 4. Life is not easy, because Kavita also has important exams. She makes a timetable and studies for one hour every night. Her ambition is to become a doctor, and she has applied for a scholarship. Her advice to other teenagers is simple: do not wait until you are older to help other people.

Hi Jasmine,
Thanks for inviting me to the car wash. I would love to help because I like animals, and my family adopted our cat from a shelter. I am free on Saturday morning.
What time should I be there, and what should I bring? Do I need to wear old clothes?
I have an idea, too. We could make a poster and ask the shopkeepers nearby to share it, so that more people will come.
See you soon!
Best wishes, Arif

Model answer (120 words) A Team Challenge
Last September, our class, 3 Amanah, agreed to perform a short play at the Teachers' Day concert. We had only two weeks to prepare, so everyone was nervous.
The day before the concert, two of our main actors fell ill with fever. We were shocked, and for a moment we wanted to give up. However, our leader, Zikri, stayed calm. He shared the missing parts among the rest of us, and we practised together during the lunch break.
On the day, the play went smoothly and the audience clapped loudly. Our teacher said that she was proud of us. I learnt that a team can solve any problem if everyone helps one another.
Turn the four boxes into a short story with a beginning (the event), a middle (the problem and what the team did) and an end (your own idea: how it finished and what you learnt). Use the past tense, add one detail to each note, and show how people felt. Keep to about 120 words.
This part is marked with the same official rating scale as Part 1: Content, Communicative achievement, Organisation and Language, 0 to 5 marks each (see the table under Paper 2 Part 1). Band 5 for Content means every note is covered and relevant, so the reader is fully informed; a missing note or no own idea drops Content to about 3.
