WALKING YOUR WAY TO BETTER HEALTH An interview with Daniel Raj, coordinator of the Step Up Challenge
Interviewer: Daniel, what is the Step Up Challenge?
Daniel: It is a four-week challenge for everyone in our town. Residents count their steps every day, and we add up the total for each team. We started the idea because the town clinic found that many adults sit for more than eight hours a day.
Interviewer: Do people really have to walk 10,000 steps a day?
Daniel: That is a common belief, but not for our challenge. We ask beginners for 6,000 steps a day in the first week, and the goal rises slowly to 8,000 steps in the last week.
Interviewer: How do people count their steps?
Daniel: Most people use a free phone app called StepMate. Those who do not have a smartphone can borrow a pedometer from the library. At first we planned a deposit of RM20, but we lowered it to RM10 so that more people could join.
Interviewer: And what do the winners get?
Daniel: There is no cash prize. The team with the highest total wins a picnic hamper, and everyone who finishes the four weeks receives a water bottle.

THE RHINOCEROS HORNBILL: GUARDIAN OF THE RAINFOREST
Paragraph 1. The rhinoceros hornbill is the state bird of Sarawak. It gets its name from the large orange-and-red casque on top of its beak, which looks like the horn of a rhinoceros. The casque looks heavy, but it is hollow and very light.
Paragraph 2. The nesting habits of this bird are unusual. When it is time to lay her eggs, the female enters a hole high in a tree trunk. The entrance is then sealed with mud, and only a narrow gap is left. For about four months she stays inside, while the male flies out every day to bring her figs and other fruit through the gap.
Paragraph 3. Hornbills play an important part in the forest. Because they eat so much fruit, they carry seeds far away from the parent tree, and new trees grow where the seeds fall. However, the hornbill is now endangered. Old trees with large holes are cut down for timber, and hunters take the birds for their feathers. As a result, the number of hornbills in many areas has fallen.
Paragraph 4. The Iban people of Sarawak have always respected the bird. During the Gawai Dayak festival, dancers wear headdresses made with long hornbill feathers. Today, some groups are building artificial nest boxes and planting fig trees to help the birds recover.

Hi Zack,
That's wonderful news! I can't wait to see you.
I recommend Taman Negara Park, because you can walk through the rainforest and see birds, monkeys and maybe even a tapir. You should bring comfortable shoes, a hat and a raincoat, since it can rain suddenly.
Our Heritage Day was great fun. I wore a baju Melayu, and we ate traditional kuih and watched a kuda kepang dance. My favourite part was the batik painting.
Please tell me what day you will arrive, and my family will meet you at the bus station.
Best wishes, Amir

Model answer (about 105 words) A Day with the Gentle Giants
Last Saturday, our class visited the Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary in Pahang. It was an unforgettable trip.
When we arrived, we saw baby elephants drinking milk from big bottles. Later, the whole herd walked slowly to the river and splashed in the cool water. We even fed bananas to the calves, and a ranger explained how injured elephants are rescued from the forest.
My favourite part was watching the elephants bathe, because they looked so happy and playful.
I would strongly recommend this sanctuary to families and school groups. It is both fun and educational, and it teaches us to protect wildlife.
A review has a title, an introduction, the details, your opinion and a recommendation. Turn the four boxes into paragraphs: where and when, what you saw and did, then your opinion and recommendation. Use the past tense for the visit and the present for your recommendation, and add describing words so that the reader can picture the place. Keep to about 110 words.
This part is marked with the same official rating scale as Part 1: Content, Communicative achievement, Organisation and Language, 0 to 5 marks each (see the table under Paper 2 Part 1). Band 5 for Content means every note is covered and relevant, so the reader is fully informed; a missing note or no opinion drops Content to about 3.
