Rain for a Thirsty Village
(1) Seventeen-year-old Sarah Lee from Kota Kinabalu never thought that a school project could change a village. Two years ago, she visited her grandparents in Kampung Tuaran, where the water supply is often cut off for several days in the dry season. Her grandmother had to carry buckets from a river 500 metres away.
(2) Back at school, Sarah asked her physics teacher whether rain could be collected from the roof of a house. Together with three classmates, she spent three months testing different tanks. The first one leaked. The second one filled with mosquito larvae within a week. The third had a fine mesh filter and a tight cover, and it worked.
(3) The tank cost RM450. The team paid for it by selling handmade soap at the school bazaar and with a small grant from a local company. It holds 1,000 litres, enough for cooking and washing for about two weeks. When the neighbours saw it, they asked if they could have one too.
(4) So far, twelve tanks have been built in Kampung Tuaran. "I used to think that important inventions were made only by adults in laboratories," says Sarah. "But I learned that the best place to start is a problem close to home." She now plans to study engineering, and she teaches students at nearby schools how to build their own tanks.

How about going together next Sunday morning? It is still open until the 20th.
Could you buy a science fiction book for me? I will give you the money on Monday at school.
Thanks a lot!

Plan before you write: there are three bullet points, so write one or two sentences for each, in the same order. Greet your friend, apologise, and close with thanks. Keep to about 60 words: this is a short message, not a letter.
Rating scale (Paper 2), 0 to 5 marks for each of the four areas:
| Scale | Content | Communicative achievement | Organisation | Language |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | All content is relevant to the task. Target reader is fully informed. | Text communicates straightforward ideas using the conventions of the task well. | Uses a variety of connectors and cohesive devices appropriately. | Uses everyday vocabulary and simple grammar with good control. Errors do not stop the reader from understanding. |
| 4 | Performance shares features of scores 3 and 5. | |||
| 3 | Minor irrelevances and/or omissions. Target reader is on the whole informed. | Communicates simple ideas in simple ways. | Text is connected using basic, high-frequency connectors. | Uses basic vocabulary reasonably and simple grammar with some control. Errors may impede meaning at times. |
| 2 | Performance shares features of scores 1 and 3. | |||
| 1 | Irrelevances or misinterpretation. Target reader is minimally informed. | Isolated short units, not always communicating successfully. | Unlikely to be connected, except with and. | Isolated words and phrases; few simple forms with limited control. |
| 0 | Content is totally irrelevant. | Performance below band 1. | ||
The tick points give the same 20 marks: five for each area.
Paper 2 Part 2
20 marksQuestion 42
In about 120 words, write an article for the magazine. Use the notes below.
| Smart money habits | |
|---|---|
| Save | keep part of your allowance every week |
| Plan | make a list before shopping; compare prices |
| Be careful online | avoid buying things on impulse |
| Your own idea | ... |
Show answerHide answer
Smart Money Habits for Teenagers
Many teenagers spend all their money as soon as they receive it. However, learning to handle money early will help us for the rest of our lives.
Firstly, we should save a part of our allowance every week. Even RM2 a week becomes more than RM100 in one year.
Secondly, we must plan before we shop. If we write a list and compare prices, we will not buy things we do not need.
Besides that, we should be careful when we shop online. Pretty advertisements make us want to buy things at once, so it is better to wait a day before paying.
Finally, we can write down what we spend in a small notebook.
In short, small habits today will make us wiser tomorrow.
Give your article a title and turn each note into one short paragraph. Write each note as a full sentence and add one more sentence with a detail or a reason. Your own idea counts as content, so give it its own sentence or paragraph. Use should, must and if sentences to give advice.
This part is marked with the same rating scale as Part 1: Content, Communicative achievement, Organisation and Language, 0 to 5 marks each (see the table under Paper 2 Part 1).
Paper 2 Part 3
20 marksQuestion 43
"I was glad that I had decided to speak up that day."
In your story, make sure you:
- describe the situation and where it happened;
- explain why you were afraid to speak up;
- say what happened after you spoke.
Show answerHide answer
It was the last period on a Friday, and our class was working on a group project. Everyone was tired, but our group leader, Zarif, kept asking us to stay behind after school every day for a week.
I knew that several members had already told their parents they would be late, and one of them, Mei, had missed her piano lessons. Nobody said anything, though. Zarif was the best student in the class and everyone respected him. I was afraid that he would be angry and that the others would think I was lazy.
My heart was beating fast when I raised my hand. "Zarif, I think we are all tired," I said. "Maybe we can meet only three times a week and work from home on the other days."
There was silence. Then Mei smiled and said, "I agree." One by one, the others nodded. Zarif looked surprised, but he finally laughed. "You are right. I did not realise I was asking too much."
We finished the project one week early, and we got the highest mark in the class. I was glad that I had decided to speak up that day.
Plan the story in three parts: (1) the situation, (2) the reason you were afraid, (3) what happened after you spoke. End with the given sentence exactly, because the examiner will check it. Use the past tense all the way through, and use the past perfect for something that happened earlier (I had decided).
Use direct speech once or twice to make the story lively, but do not let it take over the whole story. Marked with the same four areas as Parts 1 and 2: Content, Communicative achievement, Organisation and Language, 0 to 5 marks each.
