The Bus That Left Without Me
a travel blog by Haikal

Last August, I joined my uncle's tour group on a five-day trip through northern Thailand. It was my first time travelling abroad without my parents, and I had spent weeks reading about the places we would see. On the third day, we stopped at a mountain village that was famous for its weekend market.

Our guide, Khun Somchai, told us that the bus would leave at four o'clock sharp. I had planned to be back by a quarter to four, but I became so interested in a woman who was weaving silk scarves that I forgot to check the time. When I finally looked at my watch, it was ten past four. I ran to the car park, but the bus had already gone.

My heart was pounding. I had no phone signal and only a little cash. A stallholder, who had noticed my panic, asked me what was wrong. Using gestures and the few Thai words I knew, I explained. She smiled, called her nephew, and within minutes he was taking me down the mountain on his motorbike.

We caught up with the bus at a petrol station twenty minutes later. My uncle looked relieved rather than angry. He said that the group had only just discovered that I was missing and had been about to turn back. The other passengers cheered when I climbed aboard, which made me blush.

I still go red when I think about that afternoon, but I am grateful for it. Now I set an alarm on my watch whenever I explore a new place. More importantly, I learnt that a stranger can become a friend very quickly when you are in trouble.

Hi Lucy,
Thanks for your last message. I'm writing to tell you about our class trip to Melaka!

We travelled there by coach, and the journey took about two hours. First, we walked around the old town and saw the red buildings and the famous clock tower. Then we visited a museum and learnt how the port had been used hundreds of years ago. After that, we bought some souvenirs at the night market.

Unfortunately, the coach had a flat tyre on the way home, so we had to wait for an hour. Although we were tired, we sang songs and the time passed quickly.

I would definitely recommend the trip because it was both fun and educational. Write soon!
Best wishes,
Farid

A Night to Remember at the Lantern Festival

Last month, my family visited the Mid-Autumn Lantern Festival in Georgetown, and it was one of the most colourful evenings I have ever had.

The main street was lit with hundreds of lanterns in the shapes of dragons, rabbits and fish. There were also stalls that sold mooncakes, and a stage where children performed a lion dance. My favourite part was the lantern parade, in which everyone walked slowly through the old town.

However, the festival was extremely crowded, and we waited almost half an hour for a plate of food. Parking was also difficult, so I would advise visitors to take the bus.

Overall, I highly recommend the festival to anyone who enjoys culture and photography. Although it is busy, it is truly unforgettable.

State what the place is, describe it with details, mention a weakness and finish with a clear recommendation.

When the plane finally landed, I realised that I had left my passport at home. My stomach dropped as I stood in the queue at the airport in Brisbane, holding only my ticket and a heavy bag.

“Next, please,” said the officer. My hands were shaking while I explained what had happened. She listened calmly and asked me to wait on a bench.

Meanwhile, I phoned my mother. She had already found the passport on my desk and had sent a photograph of it to my uncle, who was waiting outside. After an hour, the officer checked the copy and my school card, and then she let me through.

“Next time, check your bag before you leave,” she said with a smile.

Relieved, I hugged my uncle, and I promised myself that I would never travel without a checklist again.

Begin with the given sentence, then write the problem, the turning point and the ending in past tenses, with some direct speech.
