Question 19

THE WRONG SHOP
by Irfan Hakimi, Form 5

When I saw the notice on the school board in January, I thought I had found the perfect Saturday job: waiter at Café Senja, RM9 an hour. I borrowed my brother's ironed shirt, practised smiling in the mirror and, at 9.45 a.m. on the day of the interview, walked into the shop with the green sign on the corner of Jalan Mawar.

The sign was green, but it said Kayuh Bikes. Before I could say a word, a tall man wiped his hands on a cloth and said, "You must be here about the assistant job. Good, I was beginning to think nobody would come." I opened my mouth to explain, but a van beeped outside and he was already leading me to the back of the workshop.

He asked whether I had ever repaired anything. I told him the truth: I had once mended my own bicycle chain, and it came off again the next day. To my surprise, he laughed. "Honest, at least," said Mr Lim. "Most people say they can fix anything." He explained that he did not need an expert. He needed someone who was patient, who wanted to learn and who could be at the shop every Saturday. "Skills I can teach," he said. "Attitude I can't."

By then I should have told him about my mistake. Instead I found myself holding a spanner. Three hours later I had mended my first flat tyre, and my hands were black with oil. I was hopeless at the beginning, but it was strangely satisfying to watch a wheel spin smoothly again.

On my way home I walked past Café Senja. A sign on its door said, Waiter wanted, no experience needed. I stopped. If I had gone there first, I would have a clean shirt and a tray today. Instead I turned round and went back to Kayuh Bikes to tell Mr Lim the truth. He did not seem surprised. "I guessed you were in the wrong place," he said, "but you did not run away. Come next Saturday." I have been going ever since.

Question 33

Four people talk about crime and safety.

A. Mei Ling
Last month I was buying keropok lekor at the pasar malam when a man on a motorbike grabbed a woman's handbag and sped away. The street was packed, and for a second nobody moved. I shouted for help and a few men ran after him, but he had already disappeared into the traffic. I gave a statement to the police that evening. They asked me for the registration number of the motorbike, and I realised I had not even looked at it. I still think how much easier their work would have been if I had paid attention.

B. Haziq
In our housing estate, a group of us take turns to walk around the streets at night with a torch and a whistle. We are not policemen; our job is simply to be extra eyes and ears. Before I start my round, I check that the gate and doors of my own house are locked, because an open window is an invitation to thieves. Since the scheme began two years ago, the number of break-ins in our road has fallen sharply.

C. Mr Suresh
I run a small hardware shop in Klang, and last year I saw a teenager slip a tin of paint into his school bag. My first instinct was to run after him, but I stopped myself. You never know if a person has a weapon or friends waiting outside. Instead I noted his face and the time, and told my assistant to call the police. Now all my staff have a simple rule: never confront a thief, just remember what you see and let the authorities deal with it.

D. Nurul
Two months ago I received a message that looked as if it came from my bank. It said my account would be closed unless I entered my details on a website. I did, and the next morning RM450 had gone from my savings. I phoned the bank at once; they froze my account and are investigating. Now I never click on links in messages, and I use a different password for every account. It was a hard way to learn that criminals do not always need to be present to steal from you.

Thanks for telling me about your uncle's bookshop. I would love to apply with you! I am free during the holidays, and I would like to earn some money for a new laptop.

Could you ask your uncle what time we would start and whether we will have a lunch break?
Write back soon,

Write an essay of 125 to 150 words giving your opinion. Use the points below.
  • the benefits of playing sport
  • problems students may face
  • your own idea
[20 marks] Your answer
Show answerHide answer
Model answer (136 words)
Some people believe that every student should play a sport. In my opinion, this is a good idea because sport brings many benefits.
First of all, sport keeps us healthy. Students who exercise regularly are stronger, sleep better and concentrate more in class. Playing in a team also teaches us to cooperate and to make friends.
However, some students may face problems. For example, those who live far from school cannot stay for training, and others cannot afford the equipment. If schools lent equipment and held training during school hours, more students could take part.
Besides that, schools should offer a wide choice of sports, such as badminton, sepak takraw and athletics, so that everyone can find one they enjoy.
To sum up, if every student played a sport, our school would be healthier and happier.
Three points means three paragraphs plus an introduction and a conclusion. Give an opinion early, support every point with a reason or example, and keep to the word range. Your own idea gets its own paragraph.

The stranger smiled at me and said, "Hello, Aiman! It has been such a long time."
I looked behind me, but there was nobody else at the bus stop. My name is not Aiman. I was about to say so when the man put a heavy hand on my shoulder and began to talk about a holiday in Kuantan, the old school and somebody called Uncle Zul.
"I think you have made a mistake," I finally managed to say.
His smile slowly disappeared. He stepped back, took a photograph from his wallet and held it next to my face. His mouth fell open. "You are not my nephew," he whispered. "But you look exactly like him. I am so sorry!"
We both started laughing. He explained that Aiman had moved to Australia four years ago, and that he had not seen him since. Then he insisted on buying me a cup of teh tarik at the shop across the road.
For half an hour we sat together while he showed me photographs of his family. When my bus arrived, he shook my hand and said that I should visit if I ever wanted to see my "twin".
I laughed all the way home. Ever since that afternoon, whenever I see a stranger staring at me, I wonder whether I have another family somewhere.
A story needs a beginning, a problem and an ending. Use the given sentence as your first line and write in the past tense. Add speech and feelings, and finish with a sentence that closes the story or connects it back to the start.

Report on the accident in the canteen

To: The Principal
From: Rizal Hakim, Head Prefect
Date: 18 March
Introduction
The purpose of this report is to describe the accident in the canteen on Tuesday and to suggest how similar accidents can be prevented.
What happened
At about 10.15 a.m. it was raining heavily and water had been carried into the canteen on students' shoes. A Form 3 student, Farid, slipped on the wet floor near the drinks counter and fell. He hurt his wrist and a cup of hot tea spilt on the floor.
Action taken
A teacher on duty gave first aid immediately and took Farid to the clinic. His parents were informed at once, and the cleaner mopped the floor. Farid is now recovering at home and will return to school next week, although he cannot take part in sports for the time being.
Recommendations
Firstly, the school should put non-slip mats at the entrances in wet weather. Secondly, a warning sign should be placed whenever the floor is wet. Finally, prefects can check the canteen every break during the rainy season, and the canteen staff can keep a mop and a warning sign near the drinks counter.
I hope that these suggestions will be considered so that nobody else is injured.
Follow the notes in order and give each its own heading. A report is formal: no chat language and no personal story. Recommendations should be realistic and say who should do what.

A great place to keep fit: Fit Zone Gym
Last month I joined my cousin at Fit Zone Gym, which has just opened in Taman Maju, ten minutes from my school. As someone who is not very sporty, I was nervous at first, but the visit turned out to be a pleasant surprise.
The gym is bright and clean, and it has a wide choice of equipment, from treadmills and weights to a small swimming pool. The instructors are friendly and checked that I was using each machine correctly. I particularly enjoyed the Saturday morning aerobics class, which was fast and fun, and the music kept everyone going.
On the other hand, there are a few disadvantages. The changing rooms are small, and they get crowded after school. The monthly fee of RM80 is also quite expensive for students, although there is a discount for those under eighteen.
All things considered, I would recommend Fit Zone to teenagers who want to get fit in a safe place. If you go in the morning, you will avoid the crowds, and if you take a friend, you will find that exercise is much more enjoyable. I am planning to go again this weekend.
A review gives facts and an opinion. Say what the place or event is, balance what you liked with what you disliked, and finish by saying who should go. Keep the tone friendly and give reasons.
