THE STICKER THAT SAVES YOUR SUPPER
1 Every year, the average family throws away about a third of the food it buys. Much of it is perfectly good. People panic when the "best before" date passes, or they forget the vegetables at the back of the fridge until they turn into a brown liquid. All that wasted food costs money and, because rotting food gives off harmful gases, it also harms the environment.
2 Researchers at a university in Johor have now developed a small sticker called FreshGuard, which you place inside a food box or on a packet. It contains a gel that reacts to the gases produced by rotting food. When the food is fresh, the sticker is green. As the gases build up, it turns yellow, and when the food is no longer safe to eat, it turns red. No battery or phone is needed.
3 In a trial, 200 families used the stickers for three months. By the end, they were throwing away 30 per cent less food. One of them, Mrs Hamidah, admits that she used to throw away anything that was a day past its date. "Now I look at the sticker, not the date," she says. "Last week my yoghurt was two days late, but the sticker was still green, so we ate it, and nobody got ill."
4 Not everyone is convinced. Some environmentalists point out that the sticker itself is made of plastic, and that making it creates waste. Dr Lai Wen Ting, who leads the team, accepts the criticism. "We are not saying the sticker solves everything," she says. "But a small piece of plastic that stops a whole chicken from being thrown away is a good trade. And our next version will be made of paper."
5 The team hopes that supermarkets will start printing the colour-changing labels on their own packaging within two years. For now, the inventors are happy that something so simple can change the way we look at the food in our kitchens. "The best inventions," says Dr Lai, "are the ones that change how people think."

THE HILL THAT GREW BACK
How a youth group planted a hillside
Six years ago, the hill behind Taman Seri Murni was bare and brown. After the trees had been cleared for farmland, the soil was washed down the slope every time it rained. (27) ______ Their drains filled with mud every month and, twice, the lower street was flooded.
In 2019 a group of teenagers, led by sixteen-year-old Hanif Zaki, decided to do something about it. (28) ______ The forestry department's nursery then agreed to give them 300 native seedlings free of charge.
Planting day was harder than anybody had imagined. (29) ______ By lunchtime many volunteers had blisters, and one group was ready to go home. Then a grocery owner arrived with cold drinks and fried bananas, and the work went on until dark.
Not every tree survived. (30) ______ Hanif's team learnt to water the young trees every evening for the first three months and to protect them with bamboo fences.
Today the results are easy to see. (31) ______ Birds have returned to the slope, and a biologist has recorded eleven kinds of butterfly that nobody had seen there for ten years.
Hanif, now a university student, still visits the hill every month. (32) ______ "A tree takes years to grow," he says, "but the habit of caring for it begins with one person who picks up a spade."
| A | Instead of buying whatever was cheapest, they first asked elderly residents which trees used to grow there. |
| B | The roots of the young trees now hold the soil in place, and the drains below the hill have not been blocked once in two years. |
| C | The seedlings grew quickly in the rainy season, and almost all of them survived. |
| D | The families who lived at the foot of the hill suffered most. |
| E | He says that the biggest change has not been on the hillside but in the young people who planted it. |
| F | The slope was steep, the soil was hard and the sun was already hot at eight o'clock in the morning. |
| G | A timber company had cut down most of the older trees before the group was formed. |
| H | During the dry season, nearly a third of the seedlings turned brown and died. |

A Zulaikha, 15
We met on the first day of Form 1 because we were the only two students with nobody to sit next to. We argue about almost everything, from music to food, but I think that is why we are still friends. A good friend tells you the truth even when you do not want to hear it. Last year she told me my speech was boring and helped me to rewrite it. I won the school competition.
B Wen Hui, 16
I moved to another town when I was thirteen and had to leave my best friend behind. We talk on a video call every Sunday evening, and I have visited her twice. People say that friendships fade over a long distance, but ours has not. The secret is making an effort: remembering birthdays, asking about exams and sending silly voice messages. It is the small things that count.
C Kavitha, 14
I am quite shy, so I never expected to make a friend through a computer game. An online teammate, Sam, noticed that I never spoke and sent me a private message asking if I was all right. We have been playing together for two years, and last summer we met face to face for the first time. He is just as kind in real life. I do not mind that we met online. What matters is that he is there when I have a bad day.
D Farhan, 17
My best friend and I have nothing in common: he loves football and I paint. We met in the school clinic when we both had the flu, and we laughed all afternoon. I used to think that friends had to share the same hobbies, but now I believe that a friend who supports your interests is worth more. He has come to every one of my exhibitions, even though he cannot tell one painting from another.

Hi Jamie,
Thanks for your email! It is great to have a pen friend in Wales.
My name is Siti, I am sixteen and I live in Ipoh with my parents and my younger brother. In my free time I love playing badminton and baking cakes. My friends say that I am cheerful but a little bossy. I also enjoy hiking, so we have something in common!
Please tell me more about your cello music. Write soon!
Best wishes,
Siti
Jamie asks four things: who you are, what you do in your free time, what your family is like and how you would describe your personality. Answer them in that order and add one thing of your own, such as a question about his cello. Do not copy whole sentences from Jamie's email.
Rating scale used for Paper 2 Parts 1 and 2 (CEFR B1 to B2), 0 to 5 marks for each of the four areas:
| Scale | Content | Communicative achievement | Organisation | Language |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | All content is relevant to the task. The target reader is fully informed. | Uses the conventions of the task to hold the reader's attention and communicate straightforward ideas. | Text is well organised and coherent, using a variety of linking words and cohesive devices. | Uses a range of everyday vocabulary appropriately, with occasional inappropriate use of less common words. Uses a range of simple and some complex grammatical forms with a good degree of control. Errors do not impede communication. |
| 4 | Performance shares features of scores 3 and 5. | |||
| 3 | Minor irrelevances and/or omissions may be present. The target reader is on the whole informed. | Uses the conventions of the task in generally appropriate ways to communicate straightforward ideas. | Text is connected and coherent, using basic linking words and a limited number of cohesive devices. | Uses everyday vocabulary generally appropriately, though some words are repeated. Uses simple grammatical forms with a good degree of control. Errors are noticeable but meaning can still be determined. |
| 2 | Performance shares features of scores 1 and 3. | |||
| 1 | Irrelevances and/or misinterpretation of the task may be present. The target reader is minimally informed. | Produces text that communicates simple ideas in simple ways. | Production is unlikely to be connected, though simple connectors (and, but) may be used. | Produces basic vocabulary of isolated words and phrases. Produces few simple grammatical forms with only limited control. |
| 0 | Content is totally irrelevant. The target reader is not informed. | Performance below band 1. | ||
The tick points above give the same 20 marks: five for each area. Tick honestly, then check that your total matches the band you would give each area.
Paper 2 Part 2
20 marksmarkahQuestionSoalan 42
Write an essay of 125 to 150 words on whether gadgets make life easier for teenagers.
You must use the notes below to help you.
Show answerTunjuk jawapanHide answerSembunyi jawapan
Nowadays almost every teenager owns a phone or a tablet, and in many ways these gadgets make our lives easier. First of all, they help us with schoolwork. If we do not understand a lesson, we can search for the answer or watch a video. Gadgets also let us stay in touch with friends and relatives who live far away.
However, there are problems. Many teenagers stay up late with their phones, so they sleep less and feel tired in class. Some of us also spend more time with a screen than with our families.
To find a balance, parents and children could agree on rules, such as no phones at the dinner table. Another idea is a weekly screen-free day.
In my opinion, gadgets are useful only when we control them, and not the other way round.
Turn each box into one paragraph. Write each note as a full sentence, then add a reason or an example. Do not copy the notes as a list. The question asks whether gadgets make life easier, so give your view clearly: they help, they cause problems, and a balance is needed. Your own idea counts as content, so give it a place in the third paragraph or its own paragraph.
This part is marked with the same rating scale as Part 1 (see the table under Paper 2 Part 1): Content, Communicative achievement, Organisation and Language, 0 to 5 marks each. Content 5 means every note is covered and developed, so a missing note or no own idea takes Content down to about 3. Writing under 100 words or over 180 words usually loses a mark in Organisation.
Paper 2 Part 3

Question 43. Your teacher has asked you to write a story for the school magazine.
Your story must end with this sentence:
Looking back, that trip changed our friendship for ever.
Write your story.

Imran and I had been best friends since primary school, so when his uncle invited us to camp at a lake in Pahang, we packed our bags without a second thought. On the first evening, however, we quarrelled. I had forgotten to bring the tent poles, and Imran, who was usually patient, lost his temper.
"You never listen!" he shouted. I answered rudely and walked off into the trees to be alone.
It was almost dark when I realised that I could no longer see the camp fire. I had no torch, and my phone had no signal. My heart pounded as I turned in circles. Then I heard a voice calling my name, again and again. Imran was walking along the path with a torch, and he was holding a long rope that was tied to a tree at the campsite so that he would not lose his way back.
"I am sorry," I said. "Me too," he answered, and we both laughed with relief.
That night we borrowed branches from the forest floor and built a small shelter, and we talked until the stars came out. I learnt that Imran was afraid of the dark, and he learnt that I was afraid of being alone. Before we went to sleep, we promised to tell each other the truth, even when it was difficult.
Looking back, that trip changed our friendship for ever.
The last sentence is given, so plan backwards: what happened on the trip that could change a friendship (a quarrel, a rescue, a secret, a promise)? Build up to it and use the given line as the final sentence, written exactly as printed. Use description and feelings and at least one line of direct speech.
Part 3 is marked with the same four areas as Parts 1 and 2 (0 to 5 each; see the table under Paper 2 Part 1). Only one question is answered, so only one is marked.

Going Green Starts at Home
Did you know that an average household produces more than a kilogram of rubbish every day? Our homes are the best place to start saving the planet, and you do not need to be an expert to do it.
First of all, save energy. Switch off lights and fans when you leave a room, and unplug chargers that are not being used. If you set the air-conditioner to 25 degrees instead of 18, you will lower the electricity bill and reduce pollution.
Secondly, waste less. Take cloth bags to the market, and bring a bottle to school instead of buying plastic ones. Leftover rice can become fried rice for lunch, and vegetable peelings can be turned into compost for the plants.
Besides that, save water. A bucket of rainwater can wash the car, and a shorter shower saves many litres.
Of course, it is not always easy to persuade parents and younger brothers and sisters. One idea is to turn it into a family game: whoever produces the least rubbish in a week wins a small prize. Children enjoy competitions, and soon the whole family will be doing it without being asked.
In my opinion, a greener home is a happier and cheaper home, so why not begin today?
An article has a title and speaks to the reader. Cover the three parts of the task in order: what people can do, why it helps, and how to get the rest of the family to take part. Use imperatives and you to keep it lively, and give small, practical examples instead of general statements such as we must save the Earth.
Marked with the same four areas as Parts 1 and 2 (0 to 5 each; see the table under Paper 2 Part 1).

Review: the Bus Buddy app
Have you ever waited at a bus stop for forty minutes, not knowing whether a bus was coming? If so, Bus Buddy may be the app for you.
Bus Buddy shows the position of every bus in our town on a map. You simply type in your destination, and the app tells you which bus to take, how many minutes it will take to arrive and how much the ticket costs. It also sends an alert before your stop, so you can sleep on the way home without missing it.
There is a lot to like. The map is clear, the app is free, and it does not use much data. I have used it every day for two months, and I have not been late for school once. The alert feature is especially useful when the bus is crowded.
On the other hand, it is not perfect. In heavy rain, the positions are sometimes wrong by several minutes, and the app drains my phone battery quickly if I leave the map open. In addition, the advertisements at the bottom of the screen can be annoying.
Overall, I would recommend Bus Buddy to anyone who takes the bus regularly. It is simple, reliable most of the time and, best of all, it has given me back the time I used to spend waiting.
Choose an app or gadget you know well. A review is not a story about how you found it: describe what it does, then weigh the good against the bad, and finish with a clear recommendation. Use present tenses for the description and the present perfect for how long you have used it. Be honest: a review that says only good things sounds like an advertisement.
Marked with the same four areas as Parts 1 and 2 (0 to 5 each; see the table under Paper 2 Part 1). A balanced review that evaluates, and not just describes, is what separates the higher bands.
