FIRST AID: A SKILL FOR EVERYONE

THE TOWN THAT REFUSED TO BE FORGOTTEN
1 Walk down the main street of Teluk Rimba at seven in the morning and you will smell coffee roasting over charcoal. Shopkeepers lift wooden shutters, an old man sweeps the five-foot way in front of a shophouse whose tiles were laid in 1921, and a cat sleeps on the steps of the clock tower. Few of the visitors who arrive on the first bus know that, twenty years ago, this town was almost pulled down.
2 In the 1990s the tin mines closed and the young people left to find work in the cities. Shops were boarded up and roofs fell in. When the council announced a plan to replace the old shophouses with a car park and a shopping mall, a retired teacher named Mdm Rohani started a petition. Within a month, more than three thousand people had signed it. The plan was cancelled, because a group of engineers showed that the buildings, although old, were still strong enough to be repaired.
3 Saving the buildings was only the beginning. Residents set up a trust that gives small grants to owners on condition that they keep the original shutters and floor tiles. Several families who had moved away came back and opened cafes, a batik workshop and a small museum of tin mining. Today the town gives work to more people than it did in the mining days.
4 Visitors are not treated as an audience. The trust has trained forty teenagers as guides, and they take small groups through lanes where tourists can watch a blacksmith, a kite-maker and a noodle seller at work. Cars must be left at the edge of town. Visitors are asked not to enter private homes, and drones are not allowed.
5 Not everyone is happy, though. Some residents complain about weekend crowds and rising shop rents, and the trust has promised to limit tour buses to ten a day. Mdm Rohani, now seventy-three, says that the town has to listen to such complaints. "A heritage town is not a museum," she says. "It is a place where people live. If we forget that, there will be nothing left to protect."

The months after the operation were the hardest of her life. (28) ______ "I felt that I had lost my identity," she says. "I had been 'the runner' since I was nine."
Slowly, her attitude began to change. (29) ______ Her physiotherapist, a former footballer who had also been forced to retire early, encouraged her to study sports science.

A Irfan, 19
I work as a kitchen assistant in a seafood restaurant while I wait for my college results. The pay is low, but I have my meals for free, which saves me a lot of money. Washing up is boring, but the head chef lets me chop vegetables and sometimes prepare sauces. I would love to get a place at a culinary college so that I can become a chef one day, and the chef has promised to write me a reference.
B Mdm Chen, 46
I have been a nurse at the city hospital for twenty years, and for the past five I have worked mostly at night. It is exhausting, and I sleep during the day while my children are at school. But the night shift pays an extra allowance, and there is nothing more satisfying than seeing a patient walk out of the ward in the morning. If I could choose again, I would still be a nurse.
C Danial, 23
I work as a junior accountant, and I spend nine hours a day at a desk adding up other people's numbers. The salary is good, but the job is a dead end and I am bored. If I had listened to my sister, I would have studied design. I have saved enough money, and in a year's time I shall leave and start my own small business making mobile-phone covers.
D Priscilla, 29
I am a freelance photographer, so I decide my own hours and choose the clients I work with. The problem is that I do not have a fixed salary: in a good month I earn a lot, and in a bad month almost nothing. There is no paid holiday either, so if I take a week off, I earn nothing that week. Still, I could never work in an office again.

Dear Mr Hamdan,
I am writing to apply for the post of holiday assistant at Bukit Indah Public Library, which I saw advertised on the school notice board.
I would like the job because I love books and enjoy working with children. I am suitable because I am organised and patient, and I have helped to run the reading corner at my school for two years.
I am available for the whole two weeks.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Aisyah Rahman
The advertisement asks for three things: why you want the job, why you are suitable and whether you can work for the whole two weeks. Open by saying why you are writing, answer the three points in that order and close politely. Keep to a formal style: no contractions, no exclamation marks and no chat language. Use Yours sincerely because you know the name of the person.
Rating scale used for Paper 2 Parts 1 and 2 (CEFR B1 to B2), 0 to 5 marks for each of the four areas:
| Scale | Content | Communicative achievement | Organisation | Language |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | All content is relevant to the task. The target reader is fully informed. | Uses the conventions of the task to hold the reader's attention and communicate straightforward ideas. | Text is well organised and coherent, using a variety of linking words and cohesive devices. | Uses a range of everyday vocabulary appropriately, with occasional inappropriate use of less common words. Uses a range of simple and some complex grammatical forms with a good degree of control. Errors do not impede communication. |
| 4 | Performance shares features of scores 3 and 5. | |||
| 3 | Minor irrelevances and/or omissions may be present. The target reader is on the whole informed. | Uses the conventions of the task in generally appropriate ways to communicate straightforward ideas. | Text is connected and coherent, using basic linking words and a limited number of cohesive devices. | Uses everyday vocabulary generally appropriately, though some words are repeated. Uses simple grammatical forms with a good degree of control. Errors are noticeable but meaning can still be determined. |
| 2 | Performance shares features of scores 1 and 3. | |||
| 1 | Irrelevances and/or misinterpretation of the task may be present. The target reader is minimally informed. | Produces text that communicates simple ideas in simple ways. | Production is unlikely to be connected, though simple connectors (and, but) may be used. | Produces basic vocabulary of isolated words and phrases. Produces few simple grammatical forms with only limited control. |

The tick points above give the same 20 marks: five for each area. Tick honestly, then check that your total matches the band you would give each area.
Paper 2 Part 2
20 marksmarkahQuestionSoalan 42
Write an essay of 125 to 150 words on whether school sport should be compulsory.
You must use the notes below to help you.
Show answerTunjuk jawapanHide answerSembunyi jawapan
Some people believe that sport should be a choice, but I think it should be compulsory in school as long as students can choose the activity.
First of all, sport keeps the body healthy. Many teenagers spend hours in front of screens, so one or two lessons of exercise a week can stop them from becoming unfit. Team games also teach discipline and cooperation, which are useful for life.
However, some students dislike sport or get hurt easily, and others worry that they will lose time for study. For this reason, schools should offer many choices, such as badminton, swimming or a walking club, and teachers must make every activity safe.
In my opinion, school sport should be compulsory but flexible. If students can pick something they enjoy, they will be healthier and happier, and their results will not suffer.
Decide your view first: for, against or in between. Then turn each box into one paragraph, using the note as a full sentence plus a reason or an example. Do not copy the notes as a list. Your own idea counts as content, so give it a place in the third paragraph or in its own paragraph. Finish with your opinion.
This part is marked with the same rating scale as Part 1 (see the table under Paper 2 Part 1): Content, Communicative achievement, Organisation and Language, 0 to 5 marks each. A missing note or no own idea takes Content down to about 3. Writing under 100 words or over 180 words usually loses a mark in Organisation.
Paper 2 Part 3
20 marksmarkahQuestionSoalan 43
Question 43. Your teacher has asked you to write a story for the school magazine.
Your story must begin with this sentence:
The shopping mall was packed that Saturday afternoon when the lights suddenly went out.
Write your story.
Show answerTunjuk jawapanHide answerSembunyi jawapan
The shopping mall was packed that Saturday afternoon when the lights suddenly went out. For a few seconds nobody moved. Then a child began to cry, and the whole crowd seemed to rush towards the glass doors.
I was standing with my little brother, Zain, outside the bookshop. "Hold my hand and don't let go," I said, but a man pushed past us and Zain's fingers slipped out of mine. I shouted his name until my throat hurt. At last, near the escalator, I saw him sitting on the floor, holding his ankle.
A security guard, who had been trained in first aid, reached him before I did. He asked everyone to step back and told me, in a calm voice, to keep Zain still. While he checked the ankle, another guard used a megaphone to lead the crowd to the emergency exits in single file. Within ten minutes the mall was empty, and an ambulance was waiting outside.
Zain had only twisted his ankle, but I trembled all the way to the clinic. Mum hugged us both when she arrived, and Dad kept saying that we had been lucky.
That evening I made a promise to myself: I would join the school first-aid team and learn what to do in an emergency. I will never forget how calm that guard was.
Plan a beginning (the lights go out), a problem that gets worse, a turning point where someone helps and an ending. Keep the opening line exactly as given and then carry on from it: the story is about an emergency in a public place, so do not change the subject. Use description and feelings and at least one line of direct speech.
Part 3 is marked with the same four areas as Parts 1 and 2 (0 to 5 each; see the table under Paper 2 Part 1). Only one question is answered, so only one is marked.

Question 44. Your class visited a heritage site last month, for example a museum, an old fort or a historic house. Your principal has asked you to write a report on the visit.
In your report, you should:
- describe the heritage site and what the class did there
- say what the students learnt
- recommend whether other classes should visit it.

Report on the Form 5 visit to the Old Tin Museum
To: The Principal From: Form 5 Arif class monitor
Introduction
This report describes the visit of Form 5 Arif to the Old Tin Museum in Kampung Lama on Wednesday, 10 September, and recommends whether other classes should go.
The site and the visit
The museum is a restored mining office built in 1915. We arrived at 9.00 a.m. and were taken round by a guide, who showed us old photographs, mining tools and a model of the town. After that, we watched a short film and took part in a workshop on tin casting.
What we learnt
Students learnt how tin mining shaped the town and how hard the work was for the miners. We also learnt why old buildings must be looked after, because they tell us about the life of earlier generations.
Recommendations
Firstly, the school should arrange a similar visit for Form 4 students every year. Secondly, students should be given worksheets beforehand so that they can ask better questions. Finally, the visit ought to be longer, because we did not have enough time to see the garden.
In conclusion, the visit was both educational and enjoyable, and I strongly recommend it to other classes.
A report is organised under headings. Use one short paragraph for each bullet point and keep the style formal: no chat language and no exclamation marks. Use past tenses for what was done and modals (should, could, ought to) for recommendations. Your recommendation must give a clear answer to the question: should other classes visit?
Marked with the same four areas as Parts 1 and 2 (0 to 5 each; see the table under Paper 2 Part 1). Writing a visit diary ('Then we ate, then we ...') instead of a report loses marks for Communicative achievement.

Question 45. Your school held a Career Fair last week. The school website is asking students to write a review of it.
In your review, you should:
- describe what the fair offered
- say what was good and what could be better
- say whether you would recommend it to other students.
Write your review.
Show answerTunjuk jawapanHide answerSembunyi jawapan
A Fair That Opened My Eyes
Have you ever wondered what you want to be? Last Thursday, our school hall was turned into a Career Fair, and it gave many of us some very useful answers.
More than twenty stands were set up by local companies, colleges and the fire and rescue department. There were talks by an engineer and a nurse, a table for CV advice and a short quiz that suggested suitable jobs. Students could also try on a firefighter's helmet, which was great fun.
The best part was the chance to talk to people who really do the jobs. The nurse, for example, explained what the work is like at night, and I learnt that qualifications are only part of success. I also liked the workshop on interviews, because it showed me how to introduce myself without feeling nervous.
However, the fair was not perfect. The hall was crowded at lunch time, so we had to queue for twenty minutes to see the engineer. Moreover, there were hardly any stands for the arts and for farming. If the organisers had planned the timetable more carefully, more students would have enjoyed it.
Overall, I would recommend the fair to anyone in Form 4 or Form 5. It will not choose your career for you, but it will make your choice more informed.
A review gives your own opinion, so use I and say clearly what was good and what was not. Keep the three bullet points in order. Give a reason for every opinion (because ...) and finish with a recommendation. A good review is balanced: praise without any criticism sounds like an advertisement.
Marked with the same four areas as Parts 1 and 2 (0 to 5 each; see the table under Paper 2 Part 1). This question is tagged higher difficulty because Organisation and Language both ask for a range of linkers and structures.
