Length, Mass and Volume of Liquid
What this chapter covers
- You can say which things are long or short, tall or short, high or low, far or near (6.1.1)
- You can measure length with units such as clips, hand spans and steps, and say which is longer (6.1.2, 6.1.3)
- You can say which things are heavy or light, and weigh and compare mass with marbles or tins (6.1.1, 6.1.2)
- You can say the volume of a liquid as full, half, quarter, a lot or a little (6.1.1)
- You can count cups to measure and compare the volume of liquids (6.1.2, 6.1.3)
- You can solve simple problems on length, mass and volume of liquid (6.2.1)
6.1Long and short, tall and short
We compare length with words. A long ribbon is not short. A tall tree is not short.
| Word | Opposite |
|---|---|
| long | short |
| tall | short |
| high | low |
| far | near |

6.2Measure length
We can measure length with small things of the same size, such as paper clips. Put them end to end with no gaps. Start at one end of the object.
We can also use a hand span, a step or an arm span. The answer is "about" because every child has a different size.

6.3Heavy and light
A gas cylinder is heavy. We use a trolley to carry it. A box of tissues is light. We can carry it.
| Heavy | Light |
|---|---|
| lorry, gas cylinder, big rock | feather, tissue box, leaf |

6.4Weigh and compare mass
Mass tells us how heavy something is. We can weigh with small things of the same kind, such as marbles or tins.
The lightest is soya sauce. The heaviest is rice.

6.5Volume of liquid
Volume is how much liquid is in a container.
- Full: no space left at the top.
- Half: 2 equal parts, 1 part filled.
- Quarter: 4 equal parts, 1 part filled.
- A little is not much. A lot is much.

6.6Measure and compare volume
Pour the liquid into cups of the same size. Count the cups.

6.7Solve problems
5 is more than 4, so the pencil is longer.
3 is less than 6, so sugar is lighter.
6 take away 2 is 4. Milk is 4 cups.

Summary
- Length: long and short, tall and short, high and low, far and near.
- Measure length with clips, hand spans or steps. A bigger number means longer.
- Mass: heavy and light. A bigger number of marbles means heavier.
- Volume: full, half, quarter, a lot, a little. A bigger number of cups means more volume.
