Animals

Textbook Science Year 1 (DLP), pages 41–50

What this chapter covers

  • You can name the parts of an animal (5.1.1)
  • You can say what each body part is used for (5.1.2)
  • You can match a body part to its use, such as wings for flying and fins for swimming (5.1.3)
  • You can say that different animals can have the same body parts (5.1.4)

Animals have different body parts. In this unit you will learn the names of the parts, what they are for, and which animals share the same parts.

5.1Parts of animals

An animal's body has parts. Each part has a name. Look at the animal to find the parts.
A horse, a rhinoceros, a bird, a snail, a tortoise and a crocodile, with labels: body, head, tail, horn, wing, beak, feather, shell and hard skin
Parts of a horse, a rhinoceros, a bird, a snail, a tortoise and a crocodile.
A deer, a goat, a butterfly, a dragonfly, a duck, a frog and a fish, with labels: horn, fine hair, wing, antenna, webbed feet, fin and scale
Parts of a deer, a goat, a butterfly, a dragonfly, a duck, a frog and a fish.
AnimalParts you can see
Horsehead, body, tail
Rhinoceroshorn
Birdwing, feather, beak
Snail and tortoiseshell
Crocodilehard skin
Deer and goathorn, fine hair
Butterfly and dragonflywing, antenna
Duck and frogwebbed feet
Fishfin, scale
Name two parts of a fish.
Show answerHide answer
Fin, scales (or tail).

5.2Why body parts are important

Every part of an animal has a use. The parts help the animal stay safe, move and live.
A crocodile with hard skin and a tail, a frog with webbed feet and a fish with scales, a tail and fins
Hard skin, webbed feet, tail and fins.
Body partWhat it is for
Hard skin (crocodile)Self-protection
Tail (fish)Steering
Fins and webbed feetSwimming
Horns (buffalo, rhinoceros)Protect themselves
Wings (bird, butterfly)Flying
A buffalo and a rhinoceros with horns, and a butterfly and a bird with wings
Horns help animals protect themselves. Wings help animals fly.
Think of the job: wings fly, fins swim, horns protect.
Do not mix up the parts of a fish. The fins help it swim. The tail helps it steer.
A duck swims in a pond. Which body part helps it swim?
Show answerHide answer
Its webbed feet.

5.3We are similar

Different animals can have the same body part.

Pictures of a cow, a cat, a hamster and a rabbit
A cow, a cat, a hamster and a rabbit all have fine hair.
There are different animals with similar parts of the body. A bird and a butterfly both have wings. A deer and a goat both have horns.
Name one part that a cow and a cat both have.
Show answerHide answer
Fine hair (also: head, body, tail).
