What this chapter covers

  • You can say what a building set is and choose a model to build (10.1.1)
  • You can use the illustrated manual to find the components you need (10.1.2)
  • You can assemble a model step by step from the manual (10.1.3)
  • You can plan, sketch and build a new model of your own (10.1.4, 10.1.6)
  • You can disassemble a model and store the components neatly (10.1.5)

Have you ever played with building blocks? A building set lets you make many models, like a helicopter, a ship or a tree. In this unit you will learn how to build a model, take it apart and keep the pieces tidy.

10.1Building sets

What is a building set?

A building set is a set of components (pieces) used to build many kinds of models. It comes with an illustrated manual.
A building set box in the middle, with models around it: helicopter, aeroplane, crane, lorry, human, tortoise, bird, horse, tree, sailing boat, deer and ship
One building set can make many different models.

The picture on the box shows the models you can build. You choose the one you want.

Did you know? A building set can make many models. A model kit can make only one model.

Shapes of components

The components have different shapes and colours.

Three components: a blue cube-shaped piece, a red prism-shaped piece, and orange and yellow cylinder-shaped pieces
Cube-shaped, prism-shaped and cylinder-shaped components.

The illustrated manual

An illustrated manual is a guide with pictures. It helps you to build a model correctly.

The manual shows which components you need and the steps to join them. Look at the pictures in order: 1, 2, 3 and so on.

Seven numbered pictures of the manual showing how to join the pieces of a helicopter
The manual for the helicopter has pictures in steps.

Assembling a model

First read the manual. Then build the helicopter in these steps:

  1. Take out the components you need from the box.
  2. Build the head, body, tail and blade sections.
  3. Join the head, body and tail sections.
  4. Join the blade section.
  5. Check your model with the manual.

Step 1: take out the components. The last picture shows the finished helicopter.
Do not start building before you read the manual. You will take a long time and the model may be wrong.
What is the guide that helps you build a model correctly?

Building your own model

You can also be creative. Use the components to build a new model that is not in the manual. First plan and sketch it. Then get the tools and materials ready. Then build it.

A girl holding up her yellow and red windmill model
A pupil built a windmill. A windmill is not in the manual of the helicopter set.

Taking apart and storing

  1. Take the model apart in order. Start from the last step you built. For the helicopter, take off the blade section first.
  2. Sort the components by shape and colour.
  3. Count each kind of component. Check that none is missing.
  4. Put them neatly in the right places in the box.
Building set components sorted into rows by colour and shape
Sorted components are easy to count and to keep.
Did you know? If one component is missing, tell your teacher. A model cannot be built without enough components.
Why do we sort the components by shape and colour?
Show answerHide answer
It is easy to count them and to keep them in the box. We can see if one is missing.
