Welcome to Module 3! This module is about the past: ancient Egypt, mummies and Tutankhamun's tomb. You will learn to say what people did, ask Did you ...?, and write about a trip.

3.1Do a quiz: Mummies

The quiz asks what ancient Egyptians did to make a mummy. These are the key words.

mummya dead body kept safe for a very long time
pyramida huge stone building with a point at the top
wrapto cover something all round
bandageslong strips of cloth
dryto take the water out

Get Smart Plus 4, p. 27.

Talk to your friend (p. 27)
The Egyptians washed the body first to make a mummy.
Past tense: we talk about something that happened before now. Most verbs add -ed: wash - washed, wrap - wrapped, paint - painted.
Wrap has a silent w at the start. When a short verb ends in one vowel and one consonant, double the last letter: wrap - wrapped.
Write the past tense of: wash, dry, paint.
Show answerHide answer
washed, dried (y changes to ied), painted.

3.2Smart kids: Did you ...?

Four pictures: a boy doing a project, a man teaching at a board, a hand drawing, a boy waking up
do a project, teach, draw, wake up

Get Smart Plus 4, p. 28.

Comic: Greg shows Anna a crystal ball and asks her what she did yesterday; she answers yes each time
Greg says his crystal ball can see what Anna did yesterday.

Get Smart Plus 4, p. 28.

The story: Greg tells Anna his crystal ball can see the past. He asks, "Did you wake up at 10 yesterday?" and "Did you do your project on Egypt?" Anna says yes each time. Then Greg asks about the pyramids she drew and whether her brother taught her a computer game. Anna asks Tony if he was there before, and we learn that Tony told Greg everything. The crystal ball did not really see anything.

Value: Don't believe everything others tell you.

Pattern: Did ...?

QuestionYesNo
Did you wake up at 10 yesterday?Yes, I did.No, I didn't.
Did she draw a pyramid?Yes, she did.No, she didn't.

The same did is used for I, you, he, she, it, we and they. After did and didn't the verb goes back to its plain form: "Did she draw?" (not "Did she drew?").

Irregular verbs

NowPastExample
dodidI did my project.
drawdrewI drew pyramids.
teachtaughtMy brother taught me a game.
wake upwoke upShe woke up at 10.
Do not put the past tense after did. Say "Did Anna wake up?" and "She didn't wake up at 9", not "Did Anna woke up?".
Answer: "Did Greg teach Anna how to play a computer game?" (In the story, Anna's brother did.)
Show answerHide answer
No, he didn't. (Anna's brother taught her.)

3.3Our world: The curse

treasuregold and jewels
golda shiny yellow metal
tomba place where a dead person is put
mosquitoa small insect that bites
diestop living
Five comic pictures: a man finds a tomb entrance, Carter opens the tomb, treasures inside, Tutankhamun's mummy, and Lord Carnarvon in bed
Howard Carter finds Tutankhamun's tomb.

Get Smart Plus 4, p. 30.

The story: Tutankhamun, an 18-year-old king of ancient Egypt, died and was put in a tomb with treasures. A curse said, "Go into the tomb and die!" In 1922, on 4th November, Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon opened the tomb in the Valley of the Kings. Inside there were chairs, boxes of food, treasures and gold, and Tutankhamun's mummy. He died 3,000 years ago. Lord Carnarvon never saw the treasures: a mosquito bit him and he died. Was it the curse?

Value: Be inquisitive (ask questions and want to find out).
