Question 11

After the crash
In October 1972 a plane carrying a rugby team crashed into a mountain in the Andes. Many passengers died, and the survivors stayed in the broken plane to keep warm. After eleven days they heard on a small radio that the rescue teams had stopped searching. Two months later, three young men decided to walk out of the mountains and look for help. They hoped to see a valley on the other side of the mountain, but they saw only more peaks. They did not have enough food for three people to walk so far, so Vizintin went back to the plane and the other two took his food. After many days of walking, the snow disappeared and they found a river, some cans and a few farm animals. At last they found people, and the rest of the passengers were saved.
What is the writer mainly doing in this text?
Show answerHide answer
D
The whole text describes real events and how the survivors were saved. A has no advice. B is only one detail (the crash) and the text does not compare air travel with anything. C is wrong because it is a real story from 1972.

Some explorers photograph caves around the world. They say caving is dangerous if you do not know what you are doing, so they never go underground alone. Question 14

Cave threats
The shapes in a cave, such as stalactites that hang from the ceiling, form slowly when rainwater drips onto stone. A careless visitor can destroy in minutes what took thousands of years to form. Polluted water from farms can also flow into caves and kill the animals that live there.
Why do responsible cavers say, "Leave nothing but footprints"?

The text says that careless visitors destroy in minutes what took thousands of years to form, so cavers should touch and take nothing. B and D have no support in the text. C is too strong: the text names visitors as another threat.
