Question 19

You have had a class discussion on sport and money. Write an essay (140-190 words, formal language) using all the notes.
Many footballers get paid a lot of money. Do they deserve it or not?
Write about: 1 talent and skill; 2 training and playing; 3 (your own idea)
[8 marks] (a)Write your essay.
Show answerHide answer
Model: Footballers are paid huge sums, and I believe most of them deserve it. In the first place, only a few people in the world have such talent and skill, and excellence should be rewarded. A top striker can change the result of a match in a single moment, and millions of fans pay to watch him do it. Moreover, a professional footballer's life is hard. Players get up early and train for hours in all weather, and they travel and play in the evenings and at weekends, so they have little time with their families. However, I also believe that football is not the only valuable job. Players have short careers, so they must earn a lot of money quickly, but nurses and teachers work just as hard for much smaller pay. All in all, top footballers deserve their wages, although we should also reward the people who help our societies in other ways.
